New Haven, Conn. (Feb. 5, 2023) - Alvernia University (7-12-2) scored three unanswered goals in a 4-3 win over Albertus Magnus (17-7-1) on Sunday evening in non-conference men's ice hockey action at Albertus Magnus.

The Golden Wolves trailed the Falcons 3-1 in the final seconds of the second period. But, Alvernia scored with 15 seconds left in the second frame to get within one. Alvernia then added two more goals in the third period to tie the game and then take the lead. The Golden Wolves then held off a Falcon power play in the final 1:07 to come away with the win. 

The Falcons struck first with a goal just four minutes into the action. Seven minutes later, the Falcons went on a power play and sent four quick shots in at Alvernia. The game then went briefly to four on four as the Falcons were called for tripping. But, neither team could take advantage of the 4v4. The game went into the second period even at 1-1.

Alvernia came into the second frame on a power play after a penalty was called on the Falcons late in the first period. Alvernia took advantage as Matthew Davies and Brendan McBride connected with Jason Finan to even the game up at 1-1 just under a minute into the first period.

The even game lasted just four minutes as the Falcons retook the lead, 2-1, on a power play goal of their own. Seven minutes later, the Falcons took advantage of another Alvernia penalty to score their second power play goal of the period and take a 3-1 lead with just under eight minutes to play in the second frame.

Albertus Magnus was poised to take the two goal lead into the final 20 minutes, but Alvernia had other plans. The Golden Wolves got one back with Hunter Alden netting his first goal of the season off the assists of Jason Finan and Davies with 15 seconds left in the period.

It took Alden just 8:15 and net his second of the season as he evened the game up at 3-3 eight minutes into the period off cross net assist from Davies. 

Six minutes later, Peter Falivena and Isaac Chapman forced a turnover by the Falcons. Falivena and Chapman then found Vincent Servizzi and Servizzi fired in a shot for what would be the game-winning goal with six minutes to play.

Alvernia's defense killed off two power plays, including one with an empty net for the Falcons, and stopped 11 shots in the final six minutes to seal the 4-3 win for the Golden Wolves. 

Colin Cain finished with 37 saves in net for Alvernia to pick up the win. Alden finished with two goals and four faceoff wins. Finan finished with one goal and one assist, and Davies finished with three assists and three blocked shots.

Alvernia is back in action on Friday at home against Utica.
