Golden Wolves Take Down Cougars, 7-3

Union, N.J. (March 20, 2023) - Alvernia University (10-6) put up four runs in the final two innings to take down Kean University (11-7) 7-3, in a non-conference baseball matchup Monday afternoon at Kean.

Kean struck first in the bottom of the first inning when Dylan Beyer walked to drive in Brett Hilsheimer to put the Cougars up 1-0 early in the ballgame.

Alvernia responded in the top half of the second with two runs thanks to an RBI single by Thomas Faggioni to drive in Nick Nutile and an RBI single by Cameron Abele to put the Golden Wolves up 2-1 in the second.

The Golden Wolves extended their lead to 3-1 in the top of the fourth when Abele drove in Connor Friedel with an RBI single to push the lead to two.

The Cougars pulled within one in the bottom of the sixth inning when Tyler Provost grounded out to drive in Christian Pellone and cut the Alvernia lead to 3-2.

The Golden Wolves tacked two more runs on in the eighth inning when Billy Dougar tallied an RBI single and Faggioni ripped an RBI double down the left field line to drive Dougar in as Alvernia took a 5-2 lead.

Alvernia made it 6-2 in the top half of the ninth inning when Jason Kelly singled to score Zach Rogacki and push the lead to four. Nutile followed that up with a RBI single to drive Kelly in and push it to 7-2.

Kean grabbed one back in the bottom half of the ninth but it was not enough as The Golden Wolves held on for the 7-3 victory over the Cougars.

Matt Gehris started on the hill for Alvernia, striking out seven and only allowed two hits through the first four innings, Jack Cossa threw three innings in relief, giving up only two hits as well and earned the win.

Faggioni went 4-for-5 with two doubles and two RBIs. His first hit of the afternoon - a single to right in the top of the second - marked is 100th career hit.

Able also finished with two RBIs on two hits. Kelly, Nutile and Dougar all drove in one run and Freidel tallied two runs scored.

The Golden Wolves are back in action on Wednesday when they travel to New Jersey City for a 3:30 PM game.
