Golden Wolves Split With Spartans, Take Series 2-1

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2 York, Pa (March 26, 2023) - Alvernia University (13-7, 7-2) secured the series over York College (9-10, 5-4) 2-1, after they split a MAC Commonwealth doubleheader Saturday afternoon at York. 

The Spartans took game one of the doubleheader, 11-7 and Alvernia won game two 16-7, to take the series 2-1. 

The Golden Wolves put up three runs in the first inning of game one when Faggioni scored thanks to a sacrifice fly by Zach Rogacki and Jason Kelly followed that up with a two run homer to put Alvernia up 3-0. 

York responded with a three spot of its own in the bottom half of the first inning, Gabe Trevena hit a solo shot to right field and Brendan Martin added a two RBI double to tie the game at three. 

Alvernia bounced back in the top half of the second when Connor Friedel ripped a two run home run to left field and put the Golden Wolves up 5-3. 

The Spartans took a 6-5 lead in the third inning after Jake Umans hit two batters to force in two runs and Brian Jakubek tallied a sacrifice fly to give York the one run lead. 

York extended its lead to six in the fifth inning when they put up a five spot with two outs. Chris Betler started the rally off with a solo shot to left, Robby Elzinga followed that with an RBI double and Trevena ripped a two RBI triple to make it 10-5 Spartans. Micheal Tinneny then singled to center to drive in Trevena and make it 11-5 Spartans. 

The Golden Wolves grabbed two back in the top half of the sixth when Friedel and Billy Dougar tallied RBI singles to make it 11-7 York but it was not enough as York took game one, 11-7. 

Umans started on the hill for the Golden Wolves, James Mueller and Anthony Mortimer pitched in relief. 

Friedel led the Golden Wolves in game one, going 2-3 with three RBIs and a homer, Kelly went 2-4 with two RBIs, two runs scored and a homerun. Faggioni went 2-4 and Dougar and Ramundo both tallied RBIs. 

Alvernia got out to a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Rogacki hit a two run homer to right field to give the Golden Wolves a two run lead early in game two. 

The Spartans grabbed one back on an error by the Golden Wolves to cut the lead to 2-1. 

Alvernia extended the lead to 5-1 after Dougar drove in Friedel on a fielder's choice and Rogacki ripped a two RBI single to drive in Dougar and Faggioni and give the Golden Wolves a four run lead. 

The Spartans grabbed three runs back in the bottom half of the second thanks to RBI singles by Betler and Trevena and Emidio Bucci ripped an RBI double to cut the Alvernia lead to 5-4. 

The Golden Wolves extended their lead to seven with a six spot in the top half of the third, Friedel started the rally off with an RBI single, Jason Lind followed him up with a RBI single of his own to score Friedel and make it a 7-4 ballgame. Rogacki then tallied an RBI single, Dougar scored on a groundout by Ramundo and Faggioni scored on a passed ball to push the Alvernia lead to 10-4.  Alvernia made it 11-4 shortly after when Kelly singled to drive Rogacki in and make it a seven run ballgame. 

York responded with two runs in the bottom half of the fourth inning when Elzinga hit a two run homer to right field to cut the Alvernia lead to 11-6. 

The Golden Wolves tacked on another run in the top of the sixth inning when Mike Pulcini stole home to make it 12-6 Alvernia. 

The Spartans grabbed one back in the bottom half of the sixth when Tinneny singled to center to drive in Trevena and make it a 12-7 ballgame. 

Alvernia tallied four more insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning. Pulcini and Bobby Hansen both tallied RBI singles, Lind hit a sacrifice fly to right field and Dougar ripped an RBI single to secure the 16-7 victory and took the series 2-1. 

Matt Gehris started on the mound for Alvernia, Josh Kreider and Joe Scarfone and Shayne Ostrowski pitched in relief for the Golden Wolves. 

Alvernia was led by Rogacki who went 4-5 with five RBIs and three runs scored, Faggioni tallied two hits and three runs scored. Brandon Smith and Freidel recorded three hits and Dougar and Lind both drove in two runs. 

The Golden Wolves are back in action on Tuesday when they take on cross-town rival Albright at home at 3:30 PM.
