Reading, Pa. (March 28, 2023) - Alvernia University (14-7, 8-2) jumped out to an 8-0 lead and never looked back as the Golden Wolves took a 13-4 win over Albright College (3-14, 1-9) on Tuesday afternoon at Alvernia in game one of the three-game MAC Commonwealth series with the Lions.

Alvernia jumped out to a 3-0 lead after three innings and used a five-run bottom of the fifth to take an 8-0 lead on the Lions. Albright got three back in the top of the sixth, but Alvernia scattered five runs over the 7th and 8th innings to take a 13-3  lead. Albright scored one run in the top of the ninth, but Alvernia came away with the 13-4 win.

Alvernia got things started in the bottom of the first as Joe Glass reached after being hit by pitch, and came around to score after a failed pickoff attempt by the Lions and an RBI single to right field by Zach Rogacki.

The Golden Wolves tacked on two runs in the bottom of the third as Rogacki smoked a shot over the right field fence for a two-run homer, also scoring Glass who was again hit by a pitch.

Alvernia kept the Lions at bay going into the bottom of the fifth, allowing just two hits through the first five innings. The Golden Wolves then posted five in the bottom half of the fifth to take a demanding 8-0 lead.

Alvernia got the inning going with Mike Ramundo and Brandon Smith reaching on singles. Jason Lind then drove in Ramundo with a single to left, and Billy Dougar then singled to left to drive in Smith.

A Thomas Faggioni double to right center then drove in Lind, and a Glass single to right drove in Faggioni and Dougar to cap off the inning and give Alvernia the 8-0 lead.

The Lions got three back in the top of the sixth, scoring three runs with two outs. 

The Golden Wolves added two more in the bottom of the seventh with RBIs from Faggioni and Ramundo, and put three more up in the bottom of the eighth on a three-run homer over the left field fence by Dougar.

Albright added one run on in the bottom of the ninth, but Alvernia took the game by nine runs, 13-4.

Sasso picked up the win on the mound in six innings of work. He struck out six and allowed three runs.

Dougar led the offense with four RBIs and three runs scored on two hits.

Alvernia is back in action on Friday hosting Hood. Alvernia will finish its three game series on Tuesday with a doubleheader at Albright.
