Frederick Md. (March 31, 2023) - Evan Wood threw eight scoreless innings as Alvernia University (15-7, 9-2) shutout Hood College (11-10, 4-3) 3-0, in a MAC Commonwealth baseball matchup Friday afternoon at Hood. 

Alvernia put up runs in the first, fifth and seventh innings enroute to the 3-0 victory. 

The Golden Wolves tallied the first run of the day in the bottom of the first inning when Jason Kelly drew a bases loaded walk to force in Thomas Faggioni and give Alvernia an early one run lead. 

The Blazers threatened in the top half of the third inning, with runners on first and third, Alvernia pitcher Evan Wood faked a pick-off to first base and picked off the runner at third to eliminate the scoring threat and preserve the one run lead. 

Alvernia put one run across in the fifth inning when Faggioni scored on a fielding error by the Blazers to extend the Golden Wolves lead to 2-0. 

The Golden Wolves made it 3-0 in the bottom half of the seventh inning when Nick Nutile scored thanks to a Joe Glass fielder's choice to push the Alvernia lead to three with two innings to play. 

Shayne Ostrowsky came on in relief for the Golden Wolves and shut down the Blazers in the ninth to secure the 3-0 shutout win. 

Wood gets the win on the mound and improves to 4-0, going eight scoreless innings, striking out four and allowing seven hits. Ostrowsky came on in the ninth and is credited with the save. 

Faggioni led the Golden Wolves with three hits, two runs scored and a double, Connor Friedel tallied two hits, including a double and Glass and Kelly both recorded RBIs. 

The Golden Wolves are back in action Sunday when they host the Blazers for game two and three of the MAC Commonwealth series. Game one of the doubleheader is scheduled for 12:00 PM.
