Alvernia Splits Sunday with Hood, Golden Wolves Take Series

Reading, Pa. (April 2, 2023) - Alvernia University (16-8, 10-3) picked up a win in game one on the afternoon to secure the series over Hood College (12-11, 5-4) but the Blazers snagged a win in game two to prevent the series sweep on Sunday afternoon in MAC Commonwealth baseball action at Alvernia.

Due to rescheduling that saw game one get moved from Alvernia to Hood, the Blazers were the home team in both games at Alvernia on Sunday.

In game one of the afternoon, Alvernia used a six-run sixth inning to break a 3-3 tie and come away with a 9-4 win. The Blazers then took a 2-1 lead early in game two and held the lead the rest of the way as Hood took a 7-3 win.

Alvernia got on the board as Billy Dougar hit a bases loaded sacrifice fly to score Jason Kelly, who led off the top of the second with a single to left. Alvernia stranded two runners in the inning as Connor Friedel was caught stealing on the third base line as the Hood catcher pump-faked on a steal attempt to second.

The Blazers evened it up at 1-1 in the bottom of the third on a single through the right side to score a runner on second. Hood then took the lead on a one-run triple to right field.

The Blazers tacked onto their lead in the bottom of the fourth with a bases loaded squeeze to score a run and go up 3-1 after four innings.

The Golden Wolves evened it up at 3-3 in the top of the fifth as Joe Glass singled to left field to score Dougar, who reached on a double down the left field line earlier in the inning. Zach Rogacki then drove in Joe Glass with a double to right field to even it up at 3-3. Alvernia nearly added to its lead as Jason Kelly hit a high fly ball to deep center with two on. The wind nearly carried it out, but Hood's center fielder made a catch off the fence to end the inning and send the game into the bottom of the fifth tied at 3-3.

Alvernia broke the tie with a big top of the sixth. Thomas Faggioni hit a two-run single to center to score Nick Nutile and Robert Hansen. Alvernia kept things rolling with Mike Ramundo driving in Joe Glass and Faggioni with a two-out double to left field. Connor Friedel was then hit by a pitch with bases loaded to score Alvernia's fifth run of the inning as Rogacki came home, and Hansen was walked with the bases loaded to plate Alvernia's sixth run and give Alvernia the 9-3 lead going into the bottom of the sixth.

The Blazers got one back following two errors in the bottom of the sixth for Alvernia, but Alvernia retired the side in the bottom of the seventh to take the 9-4 win.

Matt Mays got the win in relief for Alvernia, striking out three in two and a third innings of work. Joe Glass came off the bench and led Alvernia with two hits and two runs scored.

In game two of the afternoon, Alvernia put up one run in the top of the first as Glass scored on a Blazer error during Mike Ramundo's at-bat to give Alvernia the 1-0 lead.

The Blazers got two back on two Alvernia errors in the bottom of the first to take a 2-1 lead after an inning of play.

The Golden Wolves had two on with one out in the top of the second, but Hood struckout Dougar and the Hood right fielder layed out for a fantastic diving catch on Faggioni's at-bat to end the Alvernia threat.

The Blazers added two more to their lead in the bottom of the third with two runs scoring on two hits to take a 4-1 lead.

Alvernia got one back in the top of the sixth as Jason Lind drove in Connor Friedel on a single through the left side to make it a 4-2 game.

The Blazers extended their lead in the bottom of the sixth. Two runs scored on a single up the middle with one out, and a gapper into left center scored Hood's third of the inning to give the Blazers a 7-2 lead.

The Golden Wolves nearly threatened in the top of the seventh. With two on and one out, Friedel singled to left field to score Ramundo. But, Alvernia's next two batters were retired as Hood took the 7-3 win.

Friedel led Alvernia's offense in game two, going 3-for-3.

Alvernia is back in action on Tuesday to close out its series with Albright with a doubleheader at Albright.
