Alvernia Runs Past TCNJ, 13-4

Reading, Pa (April 11, 2023) - Alvernia University (20-9) tallied 17 hits and scored 13 runs en route to a 13-4 victory over The College of New Jersey (12-15) in a non-conference baseball matchup Tuesday afternoon at Alvernia. 

The Cougars tallied the first run in the top half of the first when Chris Reeder recorded a sacrifice fly to center field to score Justin Marcario and put TCNJ up 1-0 early in the contest. 

The Golden Wolves would respond in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI single off the bat of Connor Friedel which scored Joe Glass and tied the game at one. 

The Golden Wolves put up three more in the second inning thanks to a two RBI single by Glass to left field and a RBI single off the bat of Zach Rogacki to score Glass and put Alvernia up 4-1 after two innings of baseball. 

Alvernia tacked two more runs on in the bottom half of the fourth inning when Friedel ripped a two RBI single to right field to score Rogacki and Glass and extend the Golden Wolves lead to 6-1. 

TCNJ cut the Alvernia lead to three in the top half of the sixth inning with a two run homer to left center off the bat of Jack Felipe to make it 6-3 Golden Wolves. 

Alvernia responded in its half of the inning with an RBI single by Mike Ramundo to score Freidel and make it a 7-3 ballgame. 

The Cougars came back in the top half of the second with an RBI single by Marcario to cut the lead to 7-4. 

The Golden Wolves bounced back with two insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh and four in the bottom of the eighth. Rogacki ripped a two RBI triple down the right field line to score Thomas Faggioni and Evan Thomas in the seventh and make it a 9-4 game. Alvernia then scored four in the eighth with an RBI single by Brandon Smith, a two RBI single by Faggioni and RJ Emrich recorded a sacrifice fly to right field to score Thomas and extend the Alvernia lead to 13-4. 

The Golden Wolves would shut down the Cougars in the top half of the ninth to secure the 13-4 victory. 

Chris Sasso is credited with the win on the hill for the Golden Wolves, scattering three runs on four hits over six innings pitched. Josh Kreider, Shayne Ostrowsky and Matt Mays all came on in relief to close the final three innings. 

Rogacki led the Golden Wolves with three hits and three RBI, Friedel also drove in three runs on two hits and Faggioni tallied two RBIs and Glass scored three runs and drove two runs in. 

Alvernia is back in action on Friday when they travel to Messiah to take on the Falcons at 3:30 PM in game one of the MAC Commonwealth series.
