Alvernia Falls to Widener, 15-6

Reading, Pa. (April 19, 2023) - Widener University (7-6, 4-2) used a strong first half to take a 15-6 win over Alvernia University (4-10, 0-6) on Wednesday evening in MAC Commonwealth men's lacrosse action at Alvernia.

Alvernia trailed 5-0 after the first quarter, and Widener jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the opening minutes of the second quarter following three goals on a non-releasable Alvernia penalty. The Golden Wolves then held the Pride to four goals in the second half while scoring four of their own for the 15-6 final.

The Golden Wolves held the Pride off the board for just over six minutes as Widener broke through with a goal with 8:48 to play. The Pride then rattled off seven straight goals leading into the second quarter to take an 8-0 lead.

Alvernia got on the board with a solo goal from Kyle Patton in the sixth minute of the second quarter, but the Pride retook the eight-goal lead 90 seconds later.

Kenny Howley then netted Alvernia's second of the afternoon on an unassisted goal with five minutes to play in the second quarter. But, the Pride scored two more prior to the end of the half to take an 11-2 lead into the break.

Patton then scored his second of the afternoon to open the third quarter, but Widener then scored two straight to take a 13-3 lead.

But, Alvernia stayed in it and scored the next three goals. Patton hit the hat trick with the final goal of the third quarter to bring Alvernia within nine, and Christian Wright netted back-to-back goals to bring Alvernia within seven, 13-6, with 11 minutes to play. But, the Pride netted the last two for the 15-6 final.

Dane Sabarese finished with 22 saves in net for Alvernia and Jack Kenney went 17-for-24 on the faceoff. Patton finished with the three goal hat trick, and Wright finished with two goals.

Alvernia has the bye this weekend and will be back in action on Wednesday for its penultimate game of the season as the Golden Wolves head to Eastern.
