Alvernia Downs Arcadia 2-1, in Overtime Thriller

Reading, Pa (September 12, 2023) - Alvernia University (3-2) took down Arcadia University (2-3) 2-1, in an overtime thriller in a non-conference field hockey matchup on Tuesday afternoon at Alvernia.

Kathryn Palmer tallied the game tying goal in the final two minutes of regulation and then assisted Olivia Hess for the game winner to power the Golden Wolves past the Knights.

The Knights got on the board with a putback shot in the 11th minute as Charli Rissmiller gathered up a rebound off the save of Alvernia's Lexi Boettcher and sent it into the back of the net to give the Knights the 1-0 lead.

The Golden Wolves were held without a shot in the opening frame, but sent five in on net in the second quarter. Alvernia's best opportunity came late in the second quarter as Kathryn Palmer dribbled down the field and Alvernia had a 2v2 look against the Knights. But, Arcadia was able to make the defensive save to keep Alvernia off the board as the game went into the second half with Arcadia leading 1-0.

Arcadia fired three shots on goal in the third quarter but Alvernia's Boettcher saved all three to keep the game at 1-0.

The Golden Wolves applied some late pressure on the Arcadia defense with a corner and a shot by Abbie Buck that was saved by Arcadia's Anna Doblovosky. Just a minute later, Alvernia was awarded a penalty stroke and Palmer stepped up to the spot. Palmer lifted the ball into the upper left corner of the goal and out of reach of the diving Knights goalie to tie the game at one in the final minutes of regulation.

The Golden Wolves found the winner after Ava Michael won a corner with under five minutes to go in the overtime period. Olivia Hess inserted the corner to Gianna DeGregory who laid it off to Palmer, Palmer then fired a low screamer toward the bottom corner of the goal and Hess crashed in and directed it past the foot of Doblovosky to secure the 2-1 victory for the Golden Wolves.

Hannah Wolfe earned the win in net for the Golden Wolves and recorded two saves.

Palmer led the Golden Wolves with a goal and an assist and Hess tallied the game winner. Michael tallied two shots on goal with Buck, Rori Caulfield, and Brianna Burkholder all recorded shots on goal as well.

The Golden Wolves are back in action on Saturday when they host Stockton at 5:00 PM.
