Golden Wolves Fall to Blue Jays 4-2, in Annual Kicks for Cancer Game

Reading, Pa (September 13, 2023) - Elizabethtown College (2-1-1) used two second half goals to take down Alvernia University (2-2) 4-2, in the annual Kicks for Cancer game on Wednesday night at Alvernia.

The game marked the 11th annual Kicks for Cancer game between Alvernia and Elizabethtown. This year's honorary captain was Logan Alkons, an eight year old boy who is now in complete remission.

The Blue Jays struck first in the third minute of the game when Mehluko Letsoalo had a shot saved by Alvernia keeper Evan Solley but the ball deflected into the air and Elizabethtown's Sean Rieber headed down into an open net to make it a 1-0 game.

The Golden Wolves equalized almost immediately when Ryan Cogill drew a foul in the box to earn the penalty kick. Cogill then stepped up to the spot and slotted his attempt into the bottom right corner to tie the game at one in just the fourth minute.

Alvernia jumped on top just under 15 minutes into the first half when Conor Kraycik whipped a ball in off a corner kick that found the head of Justin Fetrow who directed the ball past the Blue Jay keeper and into the back of the net to give the Golden Wolves a 2-1 advantage.

The Blue Jays found an equalizer of their own with just seven minutes left in the half when Hayden Oldham connected with Pedro Vinent to tie the game at two heading into the half.

Elizabethtown took the lead in the 60th minute when Pedro Guizardi found the back of the net to make it a 3-2 ballgame in favor of the Blue Jays.

Alvernia kept applying pressure on the Blue Jays defense but Alvernia could not find the equalizer with Kraycik and Christian Topovich both narrowly missing the target.

Elizabethtown tallied one more insurance goal in the 75 minute when Guizardi tallied his second goal of the night with an outside of the boot goal to make it 4-2 Blue Jays.

The Golden Wolves tallied five shots in the final 15 minutes of the game but could not find the net as Elizabethtown secured the 4-2 victory.

Solley recorded five saves in net for the Golden Wolves.

Cogill led the Golden Wolves with a goal on five shots, Fetrow also tallied a goal and Kraycik added an assist. Gabe Wunderlich and Kraycik both tallied two shots on target and Austin Chambers tallied two shots off the bench for Alvernia.

The Golden Wolves are back in action on Saturday when they travel to SUNY Cortland to take on the Red Dragons at 7:00 PM.
