Golden Wolves Impress on Day One, Advance to Semifinals of Virginia Duals

Hampton, Va (January 12, 2024) - Alvernia University (13-2) defeated St. Andrews and Liberty University in the first two dual matches Friday afternoon at the Virginia Duals at the Hampton Coliseum.  

Alvernia recorded a 55-0 victory over St. Andrews in the first dual of the tournament, the Golden Wolves had five wrestlers record victories by tech fall and four others record victories by fall. Alvernia then took down Liberty University by a score of 36-11 to advance to the semifinals of the tournament. 

How it Happened 
  • Alvernia's first dual of the tournament came against St. Andrews University where they recorded a 55-0 victory over the Knights. 
  • Keito Shaw faced off against Jonah Mcburney from St. Andrews in the 125 pound bout and put the Golden Wolves up 5-0 after a 17-2 tech fall. Shaw went up 9-2 after the first period and then tallied eight near fall points in the second period to secure the tech fall. 
  • Ethan Staples wrestled in the 133 pound match for the Golden Wolves and took down Gerard Ricciuto from St. Andrews by tech fall, 22-6. Staples jumped out to a commanding, 18-6 lead after the first three minutes, tallying six takedowns in the period. Staples then recorded an escape and one final takedown to secure the 22-6 tech fall and put the Golden Wolves up 10-0 in the dual. 
  • Garrett Gehr competed at 141 pounds for the Golden Wolves and defeated Israel Schultz by fall in 1:30. Gehr recorded a takedown and three nearfall points before recording the pin and extended Alvernia's lead to 16-0. 
  • Quinn Tobin took on David Coptsias from St. Andrews and recorded a 15-0 tech fall to push the Alvernia lead to 21-0. Tobin jumped out to an 11-0 lead after the first period after a take down and recorded eight near fall points during the period. Tobin then came back and recorded four more near fall points to secure the 15-0 tech fall victory. 
  • Chance Babb wasted no time in the 157 pound bout for Alvernia, pinning Cameron Ladd in just 1:43 into the first period. Babb's pin pushed the Alvernia lead to 27-0. 
  • Matthew Lackman wrestled at 165 pounds for the Golden Wolves and recorded a 17-2 tech fall victory over St. Andrews' Zachary Palombaro. Lackman recorded three takedowns and eight near fall points to secure the 17-2 victory. 
  • James Circle competed at 174 pounds for Alvernia and recorded a victory by fall in 2:32 seconds into the first period to secure six more points for the Golden Wolves and extend the lead to 38-0. 
  • Gavin Hollingsworth continued to add to the tech fall total for the Golden Wolves with a 18-3 victory over Dakota Johnson from St. Andrews. Hollingsworth grabbed a 12-2 lead after the first period and then tallied two takedowns in the first minute of the second period to secure the tech fall and extend the lead to 43-0. 
  • Mauro Pellot-Vazquez received a victory by forfeit in the 197 pound match and added six points to the lead. 
  • Brian Czaus rounded things out for the Golden Wolves with a pin in 4:11 over Zyir Gordon to secure the 55-0 victory for the Golden Wolves. 
 
  • The Golden Wolves took on Liberty in the second dual of the day and recorded a 36-11 victory over the Flames to advance to the semifinals. 
  • Alvernia got things going early with three victories in the first three matches, grabbing an early 14-0 lead. Keito Shaw recorded a 14-6 major decision in the 125 pound bout, Anthony Portillo took down Walker Chambers from Liberty with a 16-1 tech fall at 133 pounds and Avery Leonard followed Portillo up with a tech fall of his own, 15-0 over Blake Schmitt at 141 pounds. 
  • The Golden Wolves then sent Brandon Flores-Salazar out to compete in the 149 pound bout where he took on Garrett Good from Liberty. Flores-Salazar recorded a 4-1 sudden victory after a takedown 50 seconds into the overtime period to secure three more points for Alvernia and extend the lead to 17-0. 
  • Jason Rezac wrestled in the 157 pound match for Alvernia and took down Reid Stewart from Liberty by way of a pin, 1:55 into the first period. The fall secured six more points for the Golden Wolves. 
  • Matthew Lackman recorded a 17-0 tech fall against Josiah Foss in the 165 pound match and James Circle followed Lackman up with a 15-0 tech fall of his own as the Alvernia lead grew to 33-0. 
  • Daniel Schweitzer competed at 184 pounds for the Golden Wolves but fell to Gabriel Hayes from Liberty by tech fall, 18-3, giving Liberty its first points of the match. 
  • Mauro Pellot-Vazquez tallied the final three points for the Golden Wolves with a 6-3 decision over Josiah Murphy from Liberty and extended the Alvernia lead to 36-5. 
  • Aiden Homan wrestled in the heavyweight bout for Alvernia but fell by way of a pin to Wade Wheeler. 

Inside the Results
  • Keito Shaw and Matthew Lackman were the only two Alvernia wrestlers to go 2-0 on the first day of the duals with Lackman recording two tech falls and Shaw recording a tech fall and a major decision. 
  • Mauro Pellot-Vazquez also went 2-0, he received his first victory by way of a forfeit and his second came in a 6-3 decision. 
  • The Golden Wolves recorded nine victories by tech fall and five by way of a pin.
