Alvernia Finishes 2-1 at Home Quad Match

Reading, Pa (January 27, 2024) - Alvernia University (17-3) recorded a 2-1 record in wrestling action Saturday at the Alvernia Quad Match at the Flynn PLEX. 

The Golden Wolves recorded wins over Delaware Valley and Trinity and dropped the third match to Vermont State University Castleton. 

How it Happened
  • The Golden Wolves started their day facing off against Trinity College where they took down the Bantams by a score of 47-3. Alvernia rattled off wins in the first three weight classes with both Keito Shaw and Avery Leonard tallying tech falls and Anthony Portillo recorded a 6-2 decision to put Alvernia up 13-0 early. Alvernia then recorded victories in the next four matches with Brandon Flores-Salazar and Jason Rezac recording victories by fall and Matthew Lackman and Gavin Hollingsworth both added tech falls. James Circle rounded out the victories for the Golden Wolves with a pin at 184 pounds and Isaac Kassis received a forfeit at 197 lbs. Aiden Homan fell to Lukas Cylwik of Trinity in the 285 lbs. bout by decision, 5-0. 
  • Alvernia then faced off against #9 ranked Vermont State University Castleton where they dropped match two by a score of 25-14. The Spartans tallied victories in the first two matches when #9 Gavin Bradley took a close 4-1 decision over Shaw at 125 lbs and Portillo dropped the 133 match by major decision. Leonard took on the #8 ranked wrestler at 141 lbs, James Rodriguez and lost a close decision, 4-1 to Rodriguez as the Spartans took a 10-0 lead early. Flores-Salazar dropped a 7-1 decision at 149 lbs but Chance Babb took down the #10 ranked 157 pounder with a close, 4-1 decision over Castleton's Nate Camisciolo. Lackman followed Babb with a 21-5 tech fall over #14 Nick Roeger at 165 lbs but the Spartans took the next two bouts with back to back pins to extend their lead to 25-5. Kassis took down Haven Tatarek in the 197 lbs bout, 4-1 and Mauro Pellot-Vazquez recorded a 7-4 decision over Castleton's Evan Day to secure six more points but it wasn't enough as the Spartans secured the 25-14 victory. 
  • In the third and final dual of the day the Golden Wolves took on Delaware Valley and saw Alvernia take a 26-20 victory over the Aggies. The team split the first two matches with Shaw taking an 8-6 decision over Malik Asford but Ryan Mansueto took down Ethan Staples at 133 lbs by tech fall to give the Aggies the 5-3 lead. Leonard recorded a fall over Sean O'Toole in the 141 lbs bout, Flores-Salazar dropped his 149 lbs bout to Greg Croce by decision but Rezac picked him up with a victory by fall in 1:51 to push the Alvernia lead to 15-8. Babb then tallied his second win of the day with a 13-8 decision at 165 lbs and Lackman tallied his third tech fall of the day, this time wrestling at 174 lbs to make it 23-8. Circle dropped his 184 lbs bout by fall but Kassis picked him up with a 5-1 decision over Dan Eckley in the 197 lbs match. Del Val's Logan Flynn picked up a victory by forfeit in the 285 lbs bout but the Golden Wolves still secured the 26-20 victory. 

Inside the Results
  • Matthew Lackman recorded a 3-0 day for Alvernia and tallied three tech falls. Lackman recorded tech falls of 21-5, 21-5, and 18-0, including a victory over Castleton's Nick Roeger, who is ranked #14th in the country at 165 lbs. 
  • Chance Babb went 2-0 on the day including a 4-1 decision over the #10 ranked 157 pounder from Castleton. Babb also recorded a 13-8 decision over Nick DeLorenzo from Del Val. 
  • Avery Leonard went 2-1 with his only loss coming to the #8 ranked 141 lbs wrestler, James Rodriguez from Castleton. Leonard tallied a tech fall in his bout against Trinity and a fall against Del Val. 
  • Issac Kassis went 3-0 on the day as well for the Golden Wolves, he received a forfeit against Trinity, and recorded a 4-1 decision against Tatarek from Castleton and a 5-1 decision over Eckley from Del Val. 

Of Note 
  • Alvernia improves to 17-3 overall in dual competitions this season and is the #14 ranked team in the NWCA National Dual Rankings. 
  • Alvernia's lone loss on the day came to #9 ranked Castleton and all three of their dual losses this season come against ranked opponents (#7 Johnson and Wales, #8 Coast Guard Academy, #9 Castleton).
