Golden Wolves Take Down Monarchs, 26-19

Wilkes-Barre (January 9, 2023) - Alvernia University (11-2) secured a 26-19 victory over King's College (2-2) in a non-conference men's wrestling dual Tuesday night at King's.

The Golden Wolves and the Monarchs split the matches evenly at five a piece but Alvernia secured technical falls from Quinn Tobin and Gavin Hollingsworth and pins from Matthew Lackman and Avery Leonard en route to the 26-19 victory. The Golden Wolves advance to 11-2 on the year and King's falls to 2-2.

How it Happened
  • Alvernia jumped out to an early 4-0 lead after Keito Shaw recorded a 15-7 major decision over Patrick Horvath from King's in the 125 pound bout. Shaw jumped out to an early 10-2 lead after the first period, he maintained the lead through the second period and scored four more points in the final period to secure the major decision.
  • Ethan Staples wrestled in the 133 pound bout for the Golden Wolves and suffered a 3-0 decision to King's Cole Anderson. Anderson held a slim, 1-0 advantage over Staples heading into the final period and a late push for a takedown from Staples almost saw him tie the match up but Anderson held on to secure three points for King's but Alvernia still held a 4-3 lead in the dual.
  • Avery Leonard extended the Alvernia lead when he pinned Hugh Bittenbender from King's in the 141 pound match to make it a 10-3 Golden Wolves lead. Leonard took an early 6-0 lead over Hugh Bittenbender after the first period. Leonard then secured two more points before rolling Bittenbender on his back near the edge of the circle to secure the pin with just under a minute remaining in the second period.
  • Quinn Tobin took on MJ Turi in the 149 pound bout and secured a 15-0 tech fall to push the Golden Wolves lead to 15-3. Tobin and Turi wrestled to a scoreless first period before Tobin recorded an eight point second period. After scoring an early takedown in the third period, Tobin tallied one final takedown with 49 seconds left in the period to secure the 15-0 tech fall victory.
  • Chance Babb took on Bret Murphy in the 159 pound bout and Murphy edged a slight, 9-3 victory to secure three points for King's and make it 15-6. Murphy grabbed a 5-0 lead after the first period, Babb pulled within two when he tallied a takedown midway through the second period to make it 5-3. Murphy tallied two more points at the end of the period to take a 7-3 lead into the final period and tacked on two more points in the third to secure the 9-3 victory.
  • Matthew Lackman took down Alex Ballantyne by fall with 1:32 to go in the first period to push the Alvernia lead to 21-6. Lackman jumped out to an early 12-3 lead after a couple takedowns before rolling Ballantyne on his back and securing the pin.
  • James Circle fell to Connor Wrobleski by fall with 1:16 to go in the second period. Wrobleski took a 3-0 lead into the second period before securing the pin just under a minute into the period.
  • Gavin Hollingsworth then took on Jacob Hatchmann in the 184 pound bout where Hollingsworth tallied a 15-0 tech fall in the first period to extend the lead to 26-12. Hollingsworth tallied two takedowns and four near fall points, jumping out to an 11-0 lead. Hollingsworth then flipped Hatchmann once more and secured four more near fall points to trigger the technical fall.
  • Myles Brown  faced off against Richard Fronheiser in the second to last bout of the night. Fronheiser went up 3-0 after a takedown in the first period and grabbed one more point after an escape off the reset but Brown came within one early in the second period after a take down made it 4-3. Fronheiser extended his lead to 6-3 after he reversed Brown, earning himself two more points after two periods. Fronheiser then extended his lead to 21-5 in the third to secure three more points and pull the Monarchs within 11, 26-15.
  • The Golden Wolves sent Aidan Homan out to wrestle Bill Grace in the heavyweight bout and Grace came away with the 8-0 victory. Grace jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first three minutes thanks to a late takedown. Grace scored three more points in the second period to make it a 6-0 advantage and tallied one reversal in the third en route to the 8-0 victory.
