Golden Wolves Blow By Lions, 101-71

Reading, Pa (November 11, 2024) - Five Golden Wolves scored in double figures as Alvernia University (3-0) took down Penn State Berks (0-2) 101-71, Monday night in non-conference men's basketball action on Alvernia's Jack McCloskey Court. 

The Golden Wolves held a commanding 51-31 lead at the half and recorded another 50 point half in the second half en route to the victory. Elijah Hamilton led the way offensively with 18 points, Janye Stanley recorded 16, Robert Cottrell had 14 and both Jakob Kelly and Kareem Diaz posted 13 for the Golden Wolves. 

How it Happened
  • The Golden Wolves took an early 4-0 lead with layups from Elijah Hamilton and Jakob Kelly, but the Lions evened it at 4-4 just under two minutes into the game.
  • A layup from Janye Stanlety off a Berks turnover sparked a 25-4 run for the Golden Wolves over the next seven minutes as Alvernia took a 29-8 lead. Alvernia shot 10-for-13 from the floor during the run and 3-for-5 from three point range. Robert Cottrell led Alvernia during those seven minutes with seven points.
  • Berks scored on back-to-back layups to cool Alvernia off and quickly closed down to 12, 34-22 with 7:47 to play in the half.
  • Penn State hung within 12 points for the next four minutes before Alvernia closed out the half on a 7-0 run to take a 51-31 lead into the break. Elijah Hamilton led Alvernia with 16 and six rebounds in the first half.
  • The Golden Wolves came out of the half and ripped off a 12-0 run in the first three minutes of the half. Jacob Stoudt knocked down a three, Kelly converted an and one, and Cottrell tallied a layup as the Golden Wolves pushed the lead to 63-31. 
  • Alvernia and Berks traded buckets back and forth over the next six minutes with the Golden Woles holding a 34 point, 80-46 lead with ten minutes to go in the half. Stanley and Kareem Diaz had five for Alvernia during the stretch, Kelly added four and Cottrell had three. 
  • The Golden Wolves held their ground and maintained the lead over the next five minutes to stay up 32, 88-56 with just over five minutes to go in the half. 
  • Berks would end the game on a 15-13 scoring run but the Golden Wolves would secure the 101-71 victory over the Lions and improve to 3-0 on the young season. 

Inside the Box Score 
  • Elijah Hamilton led the way offensively for the Golden Wolves with 18 points, nine rebounds, two steals and two blocks. 
  • Janye Stanley added 16 points for Alvernia, including going 3-4 from beyond the arc. Stanley also added five rebounds, two assists and two steals. 
  • Kareem Diaz recorded 13 points and seven rebounds and went 4-5 from the free throw line. 
  • Robert Cottrell and Jakob Kelly rounded out the Golden Wolves in double figures. Cottrell posted 14 points and three assists and Kelly tallied 13 points, seven rebounds and four assists. 
  • The Golden Wolves posted 50+ in both halves with 51 in the first half and 50 in the second half. 
  • Alvernia shot 59% from the floor and 34% from beyond the arc. The Golden Wolves also led for 39:14 during the game.

  • The Golden Wolves take the rest of the week off after playing their first three games of the season in four days. Alvernia is back in action next Tuesday when they travel to Rutgers-Camden at 6:00 PM.
