Dutchmen Down Golden Wolves in Overtime, 3-2

Reading, Pa. (Nov. 23, 2024) - Lebanon Valley College (2-4-1, 1-1-1) scored the game-winner 46 seconds into overtime to secure a 3-2 win over Alvernia University (3-4-0, 2-3-0) in MAC Men's Ice Hockey action on Saturday night at Body Zone.

Alvernia scored the equalizer late in the second period and both teams went scoreless in the third to send the game into overtime. Alvernia had the first possession of overtime, but the Dutchmen were able to gather up a rebound off an Alvernia shot and score in transition to take the 3-2 win.

How it Happened
  • Alvernia and Lebanon Valley traded possessions through the early minutes of the first period, and the Golden Wolves killed off an early penalty to keep the Dutchmen off the board. But, just ten seconds after the Alvernia penalty ended, the Dutchmen found the back of the net to take a 1-0 lead.
  • Alvernia had four power play opportunities - including two minutes of 5v3 - in the first period, and the Golden Wolves out-shot the Dutchmen 14-8 on goal in the opening period. But, the Dutchmen took the 1-0 lead into the first intermission.
  • The Golden Wolves dominated possession in the opening minutes of the second period and fired in nine shots through the first eight minutes of action. Alvernia connected on its tenth shot of the period as Matthew Imbriano tapped in the puck along the goal line to even the game at 1-1.
  • The Dutchmen retook the lead, 2-1, seven minutes later. But, their lead did not last long as Justin Pare evened the game up at 2-2 34 seconds later off the cross-ice assist from Isaac Chapman.
  • Alvernia killed off a late power-play opportunity for the Dutchmen as the game moved into the third period tied at 2-2.
  • The Golden Wolves dominated shots in the third period and out-shot the Dutchmen 17-0 on goal and 31-8 overall. Alvernia had a last almost lucky look in the final seconds of the period as Alvernia nearly caught the Dutchmen goalie skating off before the horn blew. Pare sent in a shot from the blue line that went right by the goalie and hit the post as the game headed to overtime.
  • The Golden Wolves won the opening faceoff and Isaac Chapman was able to fire a quick shot on goal. But, Lebanon Valley made the save and collected the rebound. The Dutchmen then headed down ice and fired a shot from off their bench, which found the back of the net in the opposite upper corner to end the game and secure the 3-2 win for the Dutchmen.
