Golden Wolves Fly by Eagles in Season Opener, 89-71

Huntingdon, Pa (November 8, 2024) - Alvernia University (1-0) took down Juniata College (0-1) 89-71 Friday night in a non-conference men's basketball matchup at Juniata. 

The Golden Wolves were led by first year Elijah Hamilton, who tallied a game high 22 points, and Janye Stanley who scored 21 to lead Alvernia to the victory in the season opener.

How it Happened
  • The Golden Wolves and the Eagles battled back and forth in the first five minutes of the contest with Alvernia holding a slight, 5-4 lead before rattling off a 12-6 run to take a seven point, 17-10 lead with under 13 to play in the half. 
  • The Eagles cut the lead to one after a three pointer, a two point bucket and a free throw to make it 17-16 with ten minutes to go in the half. 
  • The Golden Wolves then responded by ripping off a 20-9 scoring run over the next eight minutes to extend the lead to ten, 37-27 with 2:30 to go in the first half. Jacob Stoudt knocked down three buckets from downtown during the stretch and Elijah Hamilton added nine as well for the Golden Wolves. 
  • Alvernia tallied 11 of the final 21 points of the first half and maintained a double digit, 48-11 lead heading into the half. Janye Stanley and Robert Cottrell both knocked down threes for the Golden Wolves and Hamilton added four more to cap off a 14 point half. 
  • Alvernia extended the lead to 12, 53-41 after yet another three from Stoudt in the first two minutes of the second half. But, the Eagles would bounce back and rattle off a 13-7 run that would cut the lead back to double digits, 60-54 with under 14 to go. 
  • The Golden Wolves pushed the lead back to 12, 69-57 with under nine to go in the half and continued to hold the lead over the Eagles heading into the final five minutes of the contest with a 76-67 advantage. 
  • A layup by Hamilton put the Golden Wolves back up double figures, 78-67 with four minutes to go and they did not look back. Alvernia scored nine of the final 13 points of the contest to secure the 18 point, 89-71 victory over the Eagles. 

Inside the Box Score
  • Elijah Hamilton led the way for the Golden Wolves with a game high 22 points. Hamilton was 7-10 from the floor, 8-11 from the charity stripe and added 12 rebounds, four assists and two blocks. 
  • Janye Stanley also posted 21 points for the Golden Wolves and added eight boards and four assists. 
  • Robert Cottrell dropped 18 points, including three three pointers and added two steals. 
  • Jacob Stoudt rounded out the Golden Wolves in double figures with 14 points off four threes. 
  • Jakob Kelly and Jameel Burton rounded out the scorers for the Golden Wolves as Kelly added nine and Burton tallied five.
