13 Golden Wolves Advance, Alvernia in Third After Day One of Petrofes Invitational

Grantham, Pa (December 6, 2024) - Alvernia University is just one and a half points behind host Messiah University in the team race in men's wrestling action at the Petrofes Invitational at Messiah. 

13 Golden Wolves advanced to day two of the Petrofes Invitational with six Golden Wolves booked to compete in semifinal matches tomorrow. 

How it Happened
  • Keito Shaw wrestled in the 125 pound bracket and recorded a 3-0 record on day one of the invitational. Shaw started his day with a 16-1 tech fall over Bridgewater State's Adam Distasio and then recorded another tech fall against Jaydin Barreto from Misericordia by a score of 15-0. Shaw then booked his spot in the semifinal with a third tech fall over Messiah's Bryce Arnold, 15-0. 
  • James King wrestled at 133 pounds and tallied a 3-1 record on the day. King dropped his first match of the day against AJ Orlando from Averett by decision, 5-0. King then ripped off three straight wins in the consolation bracket with a 14-3 major decision over Christopher Dubey, a fall over Joseph Cahill and then a 904 decision over Owen Caracciolo. 
  • Garrett Gehr competed at the 141 pound weight class and tallied a 3-1 record. Gehr started with a 15-0 tech fall over Shane Perry before dropping his second match to Andrew Loniewsky by fall. Gehr then fell to the consolation bracket and ripped off back to back wins, one by fall over Ashtyn Bennett and then a 10-1 major decision over Danny Carrozza. 
  • Jason Rezac wrestled at 157 pounds and tallied a 2-0 record to punch his ticket into the semifinals. Rezac received a bye to start and then tallied back to back tech falls to advance to the semis. Rezac took down Lucien Perla by a score of 15-0 and then Chase Stephen by a score of 17-2. 
  • Chance Babb also wrestled at 157 pounds and tallied a 2-0 record on the day to advance to the semifinals. Babb recorded a fall in his first match over Connor Bauerline in 1:10 and then recorded a 18-3 tech fall over Anthony Taylor to advance to the semis. 
  • Ryan Lepore competed at 165 pounds for the Golden Wolves and recorded a 3-1 record on the day. Lepore started with a pin over Nicholas Menjivar and then recorded a 21-5 tech fall over Wyatt Frawley. Lepore then fell to Justin Richey by major decision, 14-4 but Lepore bounced back with a 17-2 tech fall over Nate Spuhler to round out his day. 
  • Matthew Lackman wrestled in the 165 pound weight class and tallied a 3-0 record to punch his ticket to the semifinals. Lackman started his day with a fall over Ethan Kring and then tallied a 15-0 tech fall over Chris Stockler to head to the quarterfinals. In the quarterfinals, Lackman recorded a pin over Connor Williams in 4:08 to advance to the semis tomorrow. 
  • Nathan Lackman competed at the 174 pound weight class and also recorded a 3-0 day en route to a semifinal appearance. Lackman tallied a 20-2 tech fall over Aiden Weingrad in his first bout and then tallied back to back victories with one by  fall over Nathan Barkley and then a 17-2 tech fall over Nick Rogers to book his spot in the semis. 
  • William Knapp competed at 174 pounds and tallied a 2-1 record on the first day. Knapp started with two victories by decision, the first over Anson Dewar, 13-9 and the second came over Ryan Gallagher by a score of 14-9. Knapp then dropped the quarterfinal match to Jake Deguire by fall in 0:32. 
  • Hayden McLellan wrestled in the 184 pound weight class for Alvernia and tallied a 2-1 record on day one. McLellan started with back to back wins by fall over Noah Harris and Billy Bell to advance to the quarterfinals but then dropped the quarterfinal bout to Myles Leonard by fall. 
  • Isaac Kassis also wrestled at 184 pounds and advanced to the semifinals with a 3-0 day. Kassis started his day with a 20-2 tech fall over Max Ferguson and then recorded a 1405 major decision over Carter Erickson. Kassis then took down Micah Kunkle of Messiah by major decision, 10-2 in the quarterfinal to book his spot in the semifinal match tomorrow. 
  • Jason Chiodi recorded a 2-1 record on day one of the invitational in the 197 pound bracket. Chiodi dropped his first match to Casey Allen by tech fall but then rattled off back to back victories by fall over Bruce Clark and Max Ferguson to round out his day. 
  • Brian Czaus is the final Golden Wolf still in contention in the 285 pound bracket and recorded a 2-1 record on the day. Czaus started with a fall over Peyton Wentzel in 4:41 and then received a forfeit in his second match to push him to the quarterfinals. Czaus then fell to Braeden Fluke by fall in the quarterfinal match.

  • The Golden Wolves are back in action tomorrow when they head back to Messiah for the semifinal and final matches of the Petrofes Invitational at 9:00 AM.
