Alvernia Hands Neumann First Loss, 3-2

Aston, Pa. (Dec. 7, 2024) - Alvernia University (4-6-, 3-5-0) handed Neumann University (7-1-2, 3-1-2) its first loss of the season as the Golden Wolves defeated the Knights, 3-2, on Saturday afternoon in MAC Men's Ice Hockey action at Neumann's Ice Works. 

The Golden Wolves scored a goal in each period en route to the win. The Golden Wolves were poised for the 3-1 victory, but Neumann scored a goal with an extra-attacker in the final minute and a half to make it a 3-2 final.

How it Happened
  • Alvernia pressured the Knights from the jump. The Golden Wolves were awarded a power-play seven minutes into the period. After being held to just one shot off target through the first minute of the power play, Alvernia broke through on a goal from Isaac Chapman off the assists of Frazer Dodd and Matthew Davies with 12 minutes to play in the period.
  • The Golden Wolves had to kill off three Neumann power-plays in the remainder of the period to maintain its 1-0 lead going into the second.
  • Neumann evened the game at 1-1 12:42 into the second period, but the tie lasted just under three minutes. Alvernia retook the lead on its second power-play goal of the night. This time it was Dodd getting in on the scoring off the assists of Chapman and Justin Pare. Alvernia took the 2-1 lead into the final period.
  • The Knights came into the third period pressuring, but it was Alvernia that found the back of the net once again. Matthew Davies scored for the Golden Wolves off the assists of Joey Arnold and Sean Kenny to give Alvernia the 3-1 lead with eight and a half minutes to play.
  • Alvernia had a couple of power-play opportunities to add on to its lead in the final minutes, but the Golden Wolves could not convert. Neumann got back within one on an extra-attacker goal with an empty net with 1:09 to play. The Knights put two more shots on net in the final minute, but Will Augustine made the stops for Alvernia as the Golden Wolves picked up the 3-2 win and handed Neumann its first loss of the season.
Inside the Box Score
  • Matthew Davies, Frazer Dodd, and Isaac Chapman each had two points off a goal and an assist. They each also had two blocks for the Golden Wolves.
  • Will Augustine finished with 32 saves in net.
  • The Golden Wolves and Knights combined for a staggering 28 penalties in the contest and combined for 13 power-play opportunities. Alvernia scored on two of its opportunities, but the Golden Wolves held Neumann to 0-for-6 on its power-play chances.

  • Alvernia has off until January 3rd when the Golden Wolves return to action at the Oswego State tournament. Alvernia returns to conference play the following weekend hosting Misericordia. Alvernia is in a three-way tie for fourth in conference standings heading into the midseason break.
