Alvernia Sneaks Past Blue Jays, 23-22

Elizabethtown, Pa (February 3, 2024) - Alvernia University (19-3) took down Elizabethtown College (8-2) 23-22, in a men's wrestling dual Saturday afternoon at Elizabethtown. 

The Golden Wolves held a 23-10 lead heading into the final two bouts of the day but the Blue Jays recorded back to back pins to pull within one, but it was not enough as the Golden Wolves secured the 23-22 victory. 

How it Happened 
  • Ethan Staples took on Ethan Liptzin from Elizabethtown in the 125 lbs bout but Staples fell by major decision, 12-0 as the Blue Jays took an early 4-0 lead. 
  • Anthony Portillo wrestled Braden Schuyler in the 133 lbs match and Portillo took down Schuyler by decision, 15-11 to bring the Golden Wolves within one, 4-3. 
  • Avery Leonard then followed Portillo up with a victory by fall over Etown's Scotty Reagan in seven minutes to give Alvernia the four point, 8-4 lead. 
  • Chance Babb then defeated Shane Strausser in the 149 lbs bout with a 16-4 major decision to add four more points to the Alvernia lead with the Golden Wolves now up 12-4. 
  • Jason Rezac then tallied a victory by tech fall with a 15-0 victory over Elizabethtown's Gavin Fehr to make it 17-4 Alvernia. 
  • #1 ranked 165 pounder Matthew Lackman took on #4 ranked 165 pounder Brian Schneider with Lackman taking the top five matchup by decision, 8-5 to extend the Alvernia lead to 20-4. 
  • Ganon Smith responded with a victory by fall over Alvernia's Gavin Hollingsworth in 2:16 in the 174 lbs bout to pull the Blue Jays within ten, 20-10. 
  • Isaac Kassis got the Golden Wolves back on top in the 184 lbs match by taking down Will Davis by decision, 8-4 to extend the Alvernia lead to 13, 23-10. 
  • Dan Schweitzer took on Trai Roland in the 197 lbs match with Roland winning by fall in 2:12 to pull within seven, 23-16. 
  • Brian Czaus wrestled at 285 lbs for the Golden Wolves against Dylan Waller from Elizabethtown with Waller recording a victory by fall, 3:57 but it was not enough as the Golden Wolves secured the 23-22 victory. 

Of Note
  • The victory over the Blue Jays is the second time the Golden Wolves have taken down Elizabethtown in a dual match after the two teams met in the finals of the Virginia Duals where Alvernia recorded a 23-13 victory. 
  • Elizabethtown has only lost two dual matches this season, both coming against the Golden Wolves. 
  • The Golden Wolves have won 13 of their last 15 dual matches with their only losses coming against #8 Coast Guard Academy and #9 ranked Vermont State Castleton.

  • The Golden Wolves are back in action next Friday when they host York College in a dual match at 7:30 PM in Alvernia's Physical Education Center. 
  • The match is also Alvernia's Senior Night as the team will recognize the 2024 senior class.
