Pioneers Down Golden Wolves, 4-1

Utica, N.Y. (February 9, 2024) - #2 Utica University (17-2-3, 16-0-1) scored two goals in the first and third periods en route to a 4-1 victory over Alvernia University (11-9-2, 9-7-1) Friday night in a UCHC men's ice hockey matchup at Utica. 

The Golden Wolves pulled within two, 3-1 in the third period but the Pioneers netted one more insurance goal in the third period to secure the 4-1 victory. 

How it Happened 
  • The Pioneers got on the board just under 14 minutes into the first period and made it a 2-0 game just over two minutes later on a hard slap shot just off the blue line that snuck past Alvernia goalie Jackson Fellner
  • Utica doubled its lead just under two minutes later when Drake Morse and Jakob Breault assisted Kimball Johnson on a power play goal to make it 2-0 Pioneers heading into the first intermission. 
  • A scoreless second period was highlighted by Utica outshooting the Golden Wolves 12-8. Alvernia's Jordan Gagnon and Gabriel Malek both recorded two shots on goal in the period as Utica held a two goal lead heading into the final intermission. 
  • Utica made it three in the 14th minute of the third period after Dante Spagnuolo found the back of the net to make it 3-0 Pioneers. 
  • The Golden Wolves responded two minutes later when Isaac Chapman assisted Jordan Gagnon who lit the lamp for Alvernia and cut the lead to two, 3-1 with five minutes to go. 
  • The Pioneers added one more insurance goal in the final two minutes of the game to secure the 4-1 victory. 

Inside the Box Score
  • Jordan Gagnon recorded the only goal for Alvernia and recorded a team high five shots on goal. 
  • Isaac Chapman tallied the lone assist for the Golden Wolves. Chapman has recorded a point in 15 games this season. 
  • Jackson Fellner recorded 40 saves in net for the Golden Wolves and is the second time he has eclipsed 40 saves this season.
