Late Surge Powers #2 Utica Past Alvernia, 5-2

Utica, NY (Feb. 10, 2024) - #2 Uitca University scored four unanswered goals to defeat Alvernia University 5-2 in UCHC men's ice hockey action on Saturday night at Utica.

The Golden Wolves led 2-1 six minutes through the second period before Utica evened it up at 2-2 two minutes later. Utica then scored three in the third period for the 5-2 win.

With the loss, Alvernia dropped to 11-10-2 overall and 9-8-1 in UCHC play. Utica improved to 18-2-3 overall and 17-0-1 in UCHC play. 

How it Happened
  • Alvernia broke through first as Vincent Servizzi deflected in a hard shot by Jordan Gagnon just under a minute into the action. But, Utica tied it up at 1-1 just over a minute later with a goal of its own. 
  • Alvernia broke the 1-1 tie six minutes into the second period on a goal from Hunter Alden off the assists of Gagnon and Isaac Chapman to take the 2-1 lead.
  • Just two minutes later, the Pioneers evened the game up at 2-2 on a power play goal. Utica had another power play opportunity late in the second period, but Alvernia killed it to keep the game even at 2-2 going into the final frame.
  • The Pioneers broke the 2-2 tie just under two minutes into the third period and scored a short-handed 90 seconds later to take a 4-2 advantage. Utica kept it rolling and added an insurance goal 11:25 into the period to take a 5-2 lead.
  • Alvernia had six shots on goal the rest of the period, but could not break through as Utica came away with the 5-2 win and series sweep.

  • Fellner finished with a combined 79 saves to set a new series high for the season.
  • Alvernia has already clinched a UCHC playoff berth with one series to go next weekend. The Golden Wolves are currently in fourth in standings with 27 points. They are two points ahead of Manhattanville and 12 points back of Wilkes.
  • Alvernia closes out the regular season with Lebanon Valley next weekend for a home-and-home. Alvernia cannot catch Wilkes, but the Golden Wolves can be overtaken by the Monarchs and lose out on hosting a first round game.
