Colonels Sneak by Golden Wolves, 9-7

Wilkes Barre, Pa (March 13, 2024) - Wilkes University (2-3) used two goals in the final ten minutes of play to take down Alvernia University (1-3) 9-7, in a non-conference men's lacrosse game Wednesday afternoon at Wilkes. 

The Golden Wolves and Colonels were locked at four heading into the halftime break but Wilkes came out and outscored Alvernia 3-1 in the third to take a 7-5 advantage into the final stanza. The Golden Wolves tallied two quick goals to level the score at seven but Wilkes scored two in the final ten minutes to secure the 9-7 victory. 

How it Happened 
  • The Colonels took an early 2-0 lead in the first six minutes of the first quarter after goals from Austin Sosnovik and Dillon Kadis. 
  • The Golden Wolves halved the score a minute later when Ryan Gilman netted an unassisted goal to make it 2-1 Wilkes. 
  • Alvernia leveled the score with just over a minute left in the first quarter when Kenny Howley connected with Colin McFadyen to make it a 2-2 game.
  • Wilkes snuck one in in the final seconds of the quarter to take a 3-2 lead after the first 15 minutes. 
  • McFadyen tallied his second goal of the first half within the first four minutes of the second quarter to level the score at three. 
  • The Colonels regained the lead shortly after McFadyen's goal but the Golden Wolves responded in the final four minutes of the half when McFadyen connected with Zackary Moats to tie the game and send it into the half knotted at four. 
  • Wilkes came out of the half and scored two goals in the first ten minutes of the third quarter to take a 6-4 but Ethan McManus cut the deficit to one, 6-5 with three minutes to go in the quarter. 
  • The Colonels responded 50 seconds later with a goal to give them the two goal lead back heading into the final quarter of play. 
  • The Golden Wolves bounced right back with two quick goals in the first three minutes of the fourth to level the score at seven. Kyle Patton netted an unassisted goal and Peter Capasso connected with Kyle Moats, who found the back of the net. 
  • Wilkes responded with two goals in the final ten minutes of play to take the 9-7 victory over the Golden Wolves. 

Inside the Box Score 
  • Colin McFadyen led the Golden Wolves offensively with three points off two goals and an assist. 
  • Kyle Patton and Ryan Gilman followed with two points a piece and both had one goal and one assist. 
  • Zackary Moats and brother Kyle Moats both netted goals as well. Zackary's goal tallied his first collegiate goal and it is the first time this season that the brothers have both scored in the same game. 
  • Ethan McManus also scored for Alvernia and Kenny Howley tallied an assist to round out Alvernia's offensive leaders. 
  • Dane Sabarese recorded 12 saves in net for Alvernia and Jack Kenney went 13-17 on faceoffs. 
Up Next 
  • The Golden Wolves are back in action on Saturday when they host King's College in a doubleheader with the women's team. 
  • Alvernia's Men's and Women's Lacrosse teams will be supporting the OneLove Foundation prior to Saturday's games. The Women are set to start at 11:00 AM and the men will follow at 2:00 PM.
