Green Terror Edge Golden Wolves, 5-3

Reading, Pa (March 2, 2024) - Alvernia University (1-2) dropped a non-conference men's lacrosse matchup to McDaniel College (4-0) 5-3, Saturday afternoon at Alvernia. 

McDaniel held a two goal, 3-1 lead at the half and tallied two goals in the second half to secure the 5-3 victory over the Golden Wolves. 

How it Happened
  • Kenny Howley started things off for the Golden Wolves just under the eight minute mark thanks to an assist from Jack Keenan to put Alvernia up 1-0. 
  • McDaniel sent three shots on goal in the final six minutes of the first quarter but Alvernia goalie Dane Sabarese saved all three as the Golden Wolves held a 1-0 advantage after one. 
  • McDaniel responded by holding the Golden Wolves scoreless in the second quarter while the Green Terror notched three goals to take a 3-1 lead into the half. 
  • McDaniel came out and found a fourth just under two minutes into the third quarter to extend the lead to three, 4-1. 
  • The Golden Wolves grabbed one back in the final three minutes of the third when Kyle Moats drove past the Green Terror defense and netted an unassisted goal to pull Alvernia within two, 4-2 after three quarters of play. 
  • McDaniel fired seven shots on the Alvernia goal in the first 12 minutes of the fourth quarter but Sabarese continued to be a brick wall for the Golden Wolves and stopped all seven to keep the Golden Wolves within striking distance. 
  • The Golden Wolves cut the lead to one when defenseman Christian Wright ripped a shot from outside that found the back of the net to make it a 4-3 game with under two minutes to go. 
  • McDaniel found one more off an empty net in the final 30 seconds of the contest to secure the 5-3 victory. 

Inside the Box Score 
  • Kenny Howley, Kyle Moats and Christian Wright tallied the goals for the Golden Wolves. Wright also caused two turnovers and picked up a team high five ground balls. 
  • Jack Keenan tallied two assists for Alvernia and Howley led with three shots on goal. 
  • Junior goalie Dane Sabarese was a brick wall for the Golden Wolves all day and recorded 24 saves in net for Alvernia. 

Of Note
  • McDaniel extended the series lead to 3-0 over the Golden Wolves but Alvernia held them to a series low 5 goals. 
  • The Golden Wolves drop to 1-2 on the season and McDaniel moves to 4-0.
