Lackman, Rezac Punch Tickets to Nationals

Williamsport, Pa (March 2, 2024) - Matthew Lackman and Jason Rezac successfully punched their tickets to the 2024 NCAA DIII Championships with their performances on day two of the NCAA Southeast Regional Saturday at Lycoming College. 

Lackman secured the 165 pound title with a tech fall in the semi final and a major decision in the final to secure his spot in the Championships. Jason Rezac dropped his semi final match but bounced back with back to back wins to secure third place and punch his ticket to nationals. 

How it Happened
  • Keito Shaw dropped his first match of the day to Mason Barrett of Averett by fall in the semi final of the 125 pound bracket to drop to the consolation semi finals. Shaw then fell to Akhil Vega from Stevens by sudden victory, 2-1 to drop to the 5th place match. Shaw then took on Adrian Samano from Ferrum and defeated him by decision, 5-2 to secure 5th place in the Southeast Region. 
  • Avery Leonard took on Josiah Gehr from Messiah in the 141 pound semi final but lost by fall to drop to the consolation semi finals. Leonard then wrestled Ryan Kelly from Del Val for a spot in the 3rd place match and defeated Kelly 21-3 to advance to the third place match. Leonard matched up against Mark Samuel from Roanoke College with a spot in the national tournament on the line but Samuel came out with the 7-3 decision over Leonard. 
  • Jason Rezac dropped his semi final match to Ryan Smith from Stevens by decision, 8-1 but bounced back with a victory over Nic Zamaloff by fall in the consi semi's to advance to the 3rd place match. Rezac then took down Garrett Cornell from Messiah in the 3rd place match by decision, 9-8 to punch his ticket to the National Championships for the second straight year. 
  • #1 ranked 165 pounder Matthew Lackman tallied a 16-0 tech fall in his semi final bout against Anthony Taylor from Averett to secure a spot in the finals. Lackman then took on David Reid from Roanoke College and secured the 165 pound regional title with a 8-0 major decision to secure a spot at the National Championships for the third consecutive year. 
  • Mauro Pellot-Vazquez was unable to wrestle on the final day due to injury and was forced to medically forfeit his final two matches of the season. 

Inside the Results
  • Matthew Lackman earned his third straight National Championship bid with his 165 pound title and allowed just four points scored on him all tournament. This is Lackman's third straight NCAA Southeast Regional title. 
  • Jason Rezac is going back to Nationals with his third place finish and punched his ticket for the second straight year. Rezac finished second at the Regional last season. 
  • Keito Shaw's 5th place finish in the 125 pound bracket is his best finish at the NCAA Southeast Regional. 

Of Note 
  • The Golden Wolves finished 9th in the team standing with 88 points. 
  • Stevens took home the team title with 164.5 total points, Averett finished runner up with 146.5 points and Roanoke College took third with 145.5 points. 

Up Next 
  • Lackman and Rezac will compete at the NCAA DIII National Championships on March 15th and 16th in La-Crosse, Wisconsin.
