Alvernia Puts On Offensive Clinic, Sweeps Hood

Frederick, Md. (March 24, 2024) - Alvernia University (12-7, 2-2) scored 27 runs in two games to secure the series sweep over Hood College (4-12, 0-4) in a MAC Commonwealth softball doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Hood. 

Alvenria took game one 14-2 in five innings and tallied 18 hits. The Golden Wolves then turned around and kept the bats going to post 13 runs in game two to secure the 13-7 victory and secure the sweep over the Blazers.

How it Happened 
  • Alvernia got out to a fast start and never looked back. The Golden Wolves got things started with an eight-run top of the first. Taylor McClain singled to drive in Alexia Fitzgerald for the first run of the inning, and Jaclyn Barbera singled later in the inning to drive in McClain. Tara Tumasz then drove in Emily Sano on a double, and a three-run homer from Brooke Hauck on the next at-bat made it a 6-0 game one out. Fitzgerald came back around to hit for a second time during the inning and singled to drive in Payton LaScala for the 7-0 lead, and McClain drove in Fitzgerald for the second time during the inning to give Alvernia the 8-0 lead.
  • Alvernia kept it rolling in the second inning. Paige Paciolla hit a bases-loaded single to drive in Barbera and Maggie Loomis hit a two-run single to give Alvernia the 11-0 lead.
  • Alvernia tacked on another three in the top of the third. Paciolla hit another bases-loaded single, this time to bring in Sano. Later in the inning two more runs scored for Alvernia on an error by the Blazers during the at-bat of Fitzgerald as Alvernia took the 14-0 lead. 
  • Hood got two back on a two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth, but the Blazers never threatened as Alvernia took game one, 14-2, in five innings.

How it Happened 
 
  • The Golden Wolves again used a strong first inning to jump out to an early 5-0 lead. A Maggie Loomis triple started things off for Alvernia and drove in Alexia Fitzgerald. Jaclyn Barbera then reached on an error to drive in Loomis, and Tara Tumasz reached on a fielder's choice to drive in Taylor McClain. Brooke Hauck then hit her second homer of the day to drive in Tumasz and give Alvernia the 5-0 lead.
  • The Blazers grabbed one back in the home half of the first inning with a solo homer to make it a 5-1 ballgame. 
  • Alvernia then posted an eight spot in the top half of the fourth inning to take a 12 run lead. Payton LaScala started things off by scoring via a Hood error, McClain then singled to drive in Fitzgerald and then Barbera ripped a two RBI double to make it 10-1. Tumasz then followed Barbera up with an RBI double of her own to plate Barbera and Hauck ripped her third homer of the day, this one a two run shot to push the Alvernia lead to 12, 13-1. 
  • The Blazers responded in the home half of the fourth with six runs of their own. A wild pitch allowed a run to score, followed by an RBI single. A bases loaded walk and hit by pitch forced in two more runs and a two RBI double capped the six run inning as the Blazers cut the lead to six, 13-7. 
  • Loomis shut the Blazers down in the final three at bats to secure the 13-7 victory and the series sweep.
