Bats Stay Hot as Golden Wolves Sweep Lions

Reading, Pa. (March 29, 2024) - For the second straight conference series, Alvernia University (14-7, 4-2) scored over 20 runs across two games as the Golden Wolves cruised to a MAC Commonwealth sweep over Albright College (3-15, 0-6) on Friday afternoon at Albright.

Alvernia defeated the Lions 14-0 in five innings in game one, and then downed the Lions 9-2 in game two. Alvernia has now outscored its opponents 50-9 in its last four outings.

How it Happened
  • Alvernia started the doubleheader off with a bang, scoring 11 runs in the first inning off of nine hits as the Golden Wolves nearly batted three times around. The first run of the inning came from Alexia Fitzgerald, who scored during an error on Taylor McClain's at-bat. Emily Sano then drove in Maggie Loomis on a single to center, and Jaclyn Barbera hit a three-run home to give Alvernia the 5-0 lead before Albright recorded an out.
  • Later in the first inning, Payton LaScala scored Tara Tumasz on a double and Fitzgerald scored LaScala and Brooke Hauck on a two-run single to make it an 8-0 game. McClain then drove in Fitzgerald to make it 9-0, and Barbera hit a two-run double to cap off the inning with her fifth RBI of the inning as Alvernia took the 11-0 lead.
  • The Golden Wolves added two more runs in the top of the second with back-to-back  RBIs from McClain and Emily Sano to take a 13-0 lead. Alvernia made it a 14-0 game in the top of the third as McClain recorded her third RBI of the game on a double to score Alaina Snader. 
  • Alvernia allowed just one hit between the fourth and fifth innings as the Golden Wolves cruised to a 14-0 win.

How it Happened
  • Alvernia got things rolling early in game two as well. Alexia Fitzgerald led off the inning with a walk and progressed to third on a stolen base and wild pitch. She then scored on an error during Taylor McClain's at-bat. 
  • The Golden Wolves plated two more in the top of the second. Both Payton LaScala and Tara Tumasz scored as a result of an error during the at-bat of Maggie Loomis to give Alvernia the 3-0 lead.
  • The Lions got one back in their half of the fourth on an RBI single to left to make it a 3-1 game.
  • Alvernia built its lead back up in the top of the sixth, plating four runs on six hits to take a 7-1 lead. With the bases loaded, Fitzgerald, Loomis, and McClain hit three straight RBIs singles. Emily Sano then capped off the inning with a bases loaded walk to give Alvernia the 7-1 lead.
  • The Golden Wolves added two more in the top of the seventh. Paige Paciolla scored on an error during Fitzgerald's at-bat, and LaScala scored Alvernia's final run of the game on a sacrifice fly by Loomis to give Alvernia the 9-1 lead.
  • Albright got one run back in the bottom of the seventh, but never threatened as Alvernia took the 9-2 win and doubleheader sweep.
