Eagles Sweep Golden Wolves

Reading, Pa (April 7, 2024) - Eastern University (20-3, 7-1) grabbed both games from Alvernia University (14-9, 4-4) Sunday afternoon in a MAC Commonwealth softball doubleheader in Angelica Park.

The Eagles shut the Golden Wolves out in game one 5-0 and then tallied seven runs in game two en route to the 7-2 victory to secure the series sweep.

Game 1
Score: Eastern 5, Alvernia 0
Records: Alvernia (14-8, 4-3), Eastern (19-3, 6-1)
Hits: Alvernia (2), Eastern (9)
Errors: Alvernia (1), Eastern (0)
WP: Danika Barthol (9-1) LP: Maggie Loomis (8-2)

How it Happened
  • Eastern struck first in the top half of the inning after Sydney Ostolaza hit a ground ball to the shortstop who elected to try and cut the runner from third down at the plate but the throw was not in time as Ainsley O'Donnell scored to make it 1-0.
  • The Golden Wolves and the Eagles traded scoreless innings back and forth for the next four innings before the Eagles posted four more runs in the sixth. An RBI single started things off for Eastern and then a bases loaded 3 RBI double to right field made it a 5-0 ballgame.
  • Alvernia was unable to plate any runs in its final two at bats as Eastern secured game one of the series 5-0.

How it Happened
  • Eastern got on the board first in game two with an RBI double to center to make it a 1-0 game in the top of the second.
  • The Eagles then tacked on six runs in the visiting half of the third inning to push the lead to 7-0. Another RBI double started things off, followed by a fielder's choice that allowed a run to score and a third RBI double saw the lead move to four. A run was able to score on a passed ball, an RBI single to right plated the sixth run and then an Alvernia error allowed the seventh run to score to make it 7-0.
  • The Golden Wolves grabbed two back in the home half of the sixth thanks to a Payton LaScala single through the left side and a fielding error by Eastern allowed Brooke Hauck to score. Alexa Ullrich then recorded a sacrifice fly to left field that was able to score LaScala to make it 7-2 but it was not enough as Eastern secured the game to victory and the series sweep.
