Cardinals Spoil Early Alvernia Lead, Take Down Golden Wolves, 9-6

Fort Myers, FL (March 5, 2024) - Alvernia University (5-3) jumped out to an early 5-0 lead but could not see it out as Otterbein University (4-3) grabbed the 9-6, comeback victory Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference baseball matchup in Fort Myers.

Alvernia took a 5-0 lead after the first half inning but the Cardinals chipped away and tied the game up in the bottom of the fourth. Otterbein then grabbed the lead after tallying four runs in the home half of the sixth to take a 9-5 lead. The Golden Wolves grabbed one back in the top of the seventh but it was not enough as the Cardinals secured the 9-6 win.

How it Happened
  • The Golden Wolves got their offense going early on and posted a five spot in the top half of the first. Ben Houghton started things off by slapping a two RBI single through the right side that scored Jason Kelly and Evan Thomas to make it 2-0. Bobby Hansen then followed Houghton up with another RBI single through the right side to plate Matt Edwards and make it 3-0.
  • Alvernia continued to pour it on in the first when Logan Nelson poked a single into right field that allowed Hansen and Houghton to score to make it a 5-0 ballgame.
  • Otterbein grabbed one back in the bottom of the second inning after an Alvernia error allowed the Cardinals to get on the board.
  • The Cardinals tallied another in the home half of the third inning after an RBI single to right plated a run to cut the Alvernia lead to three, 5-2.
  • Otterbein leveled the score in the bottom of the fourth when they tallied three runs to make it a 5-5 ballgame. The Cardinals scored their first run of the inning on another Alvernia error, then followed that up with an RBI single through the left side and finally tied the game up with an RBI fielder choice to make it 5-5.
  • The Cardinals took the lead in the sixth inning after an RBI single through the left side made it 6-5. They then extended the lead to four after an RBI double down the right field line and a two RBI double to left center to make it 9-5.
  • The Golden Wolves grabbed one back in the next half inning when Noah Waldron poked a single over the first baseman's head and down the right field line to score Logan Nelson and cut it to a three run, 9-6 ballgame.
  • Alvernia could not plate any more runs in the final two at bats as the Cardinals took the 9-6 comeback victory.
