Golden Wolves Shutout Rockford, 11-0, in Spring Break Finale

Fort Myers, FL (March 8, 2024) - Alvernia University (7-4) put up five spots in two separate innings en route to an 11-0 shutout victory over Rockford University (3-8) Friday morning in a non-conference baseball matchup in Fort Myers. 

The Golden Wolves jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after the first and then responded with five runs in both the second and the fourth innings en route to an 11-0 shutout victory Friday morning. 

How it Happened 
  • Alvernia got on the board in the bottom of the first when Matt Edwards laid down a bunt single that allowed Jake Chapman to score to make it 1-0 Golden Wolves. 
  • The Alvernia offense then put up five runs in the bottom half of the second to take a commanding, 6-0 lead. Chapman was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in a run to start things off and was followed by a two RBI single by Jason Kelly and another RBI single by Matt Edwards to push the lead to 5-0. 
  • Timmy Hitchcock then pulled an RBI single through the 5-6 hole that plated Kelly to make it a 6-0 ballgame. 
  • The Golden Wolves posted another five spot in the home half of the fourth inning to make it an 11-0 game. Kelly and Edwards both tallied their second RBI singles of the game and then Garrett Hunter poked a single into right field that allowed Edwards to score to extend the Alvernia lead to nine. 
  • Evan Thomas finished things off with a single to the shortstop and then advanced on an error, both Hunter and Mike Pulcini were able to score as the Golden Wolves held an 11-0 lead after four. 
  • Jake Umans came on in relief of Nick Ferraioli in the third inning and tossed four scoreless innings, allowed just one hit and struck out five batters. Brendan Thomas then relieved Umans in the seventh and posted a scoreless inning to secure the victory for the Golden Wolves. 

Inside the Box Score 
  • Jason Kelly and Matt Edwards led the way offensively for the Golden Wolves with three RBIs a piece. Kelly also tallied two runs scored in a 2-3 performance and Edwards went 3-3 and also scored a run. 
  • Evan Thomas tallied two RBIs as well and both Jake Chapman and Timmy Hitchcock drove in a run. Mike Ramundo also recorded two hits for Alvernia and scored a run. 
  • Nick Ferraioli started on the bump for the Golden Wolves and fanned five batters in two scoreless innings. Jake Umans took the ball in relief of Ferraioli in the third inning and tossed four scoreless innings, allowed only one hit and earned his second win of the young season. Brendan Thomas came on in the seventh and shut Rockford down to secure the shutout

Of Note 
  • The Golden Wolves posted a 5-3 record down south and will head back north with a 7-4 overall record. 
  • Kelly wrapped up his spring break trip with five runs scored, nine RBIs and hit .304 in Fort Myers.
  • Ramundo finished with a team leading ten runs batted in during Alvernia's trip, he also recorded nine runs scored and finished with a scorching .448 average. 
  • Edwards posted the best batting average while down south, hitting a whopping .478 with 11 hits, four runs scored and nine runs batted in. 
  • Umans recorded two wins on the hill for Alvernia in Fort Myers, he tossed nine innings, allowed just one earned run and struck out seven batters.
