Golden Wolves Drop Tough Loss to Rutgers-Camden, 9-8

Camden, N.J. (April, 16, 2024) - Alvernia University (20-11) surrendered three runs in the bottom of the ninth as Rutgers-Camden University (21-9) secured the 9-8 comeback victory Tuesday night in a non-conference baseball matchup at Rutgers-Camden. 

The Golden Wolves held a five run, 8-3 lead after six innings but the Scarlet Raptors scored three in the seventh and then three more in the ninth to walk the game off and secure the 9-8 victory.

How it Happened 
  • Alvernia got on the board first with two runs in the top of the first inning after Jason Kelly singled to right that drove in Quincy Esannason to make it 1-0. Matt Edwards then followed Kelly with a sacrifice fly to left field that plated Jake Chapman to make it 2-0. 
  • Rutgers-Camden responded in the home half of the first with an RBI triple and an RBI double to tie the game at two. 
  • Garrett Hunter gave the Golden Wolves the lead back in the second inning after he poked an RBI single into left field to make it a 3-2 game. 
  • Kelly then drove in two more runs in the third after he doubled into the left center gap and drove in two runs to push the Alvernia lead to three, 5-2. 
  • The Golden Wolves increased their lead to five in the fifth inning after Kelly drove in yet another run with an RBI single and Ben Houghton recorded a sacrifice fly to right to score Mike Ramundo and make it 7-2. 
  • The Scarlet Raptors grabbed one back in the fifth inning after an RBI single up the middle to cut the lead to four, 7-3. 
  • Alvernia responded in the next half inning after an infield single that scored Logan Nelson and made it an 8-3 game. 
  • Rutgers-Camden cut the lead to two in the seventh inning after a wild pitch allowed a run to score and then a two RBI double into the right center gap made it a 8-6 ballgame. 
  • The Scarlet Raptors tallied three in the bottom half of the ninth inning to walk the game off, 9-8. A sacrifice fly to right got things going and then a RBI single into the right center gap tied things at eight. Jack Murphy then singled up the middle to drive in the game winning run and secure the 9-8 comeback victory.
