McClintock and Michael Lead Alvernia to 5-1 Victory Over Wilkes

Reading, Pa (September 7, 2024) - Alvernia University (2-1) used four second half goals to power past Wilkes University (1-2) 5-1, in a non-conference field hockey matchup on a rainy Saturday afternoon at Alvernia. 

The Golden Wolves scored three goals in the third quarter and one in the fourth en route to a 5-1 victory over the Colonels. Both Ava Michael and Kelsy McClintock tallied two goals and Gianna DeGregory scored the other for Alvernia. 

How it Happened 
  • Alvernia recorded two shots in the first five minutes of the game but Wilkes responded with the opening goal of the game after Bridget Rosenfeld assisted Lexie Nevel to make it 1-0 Colonels. 
  • The Golden Wolves leveled the score in the final three minutes of the first quarter after Ava Nealy fired a driven ball into the circle to the stick of Ava Michael who put the ball into the back of the goal and made it a 1-1 game. 
  • Alvernia recorded four shots in the second quarter to Wilkes one with Caroline Martin and Olivia Hess recording shots on goal and Martin hit the post as the Golden Wolves and Colonels went into the half tied at one.
  • The Golden Wolves grabbed the lead in the first six minutes of the second half after McClintock picked the pocket of a Wilkes defender and ripped her shot into the back of the goal to make it 2-1 Alvernia. 
  • Alvernia then broke the game open in the final two minutes of the third quarter with two goals in less than a minute. DeGregory converted a penalty stroke goal with 1:16 left in the quarter and then McClintock found Michael for her second goal of the game and gave Alvernia a 4-1 lead heading into the final quarter. 
  • The Golden Wolves then added one more insurance goal in the fourth quarter after McClintock tallied her second goal of the day thanks to an assist from Ana Jones as the Golden Wolves secured the 5-1 victory over the Colonels. 

Inside the Box Score 
  • Kelsy McClintock led the way offensively for the Golden Wolves with two goals and an assist . 
  • Ava Michael also recorded two goals for Alvernia and recorded for shots on goal. 
  • Gianna DeGregory tallied the final goal for Alvernia and also recorded two shots on goal. 
  • Caroline Martin finished with a team high seven shots with five on goal.

  • Alvernia is back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Arcadia for a non-conference matchup with the Knights at 7:00 PM.
