Alvernia Drops Opener to Ursinus, 45-14

Collegeville, Pa (September 6, 2024) - Ursinus College (1-0) scored 31 first half points en route to a 45-14 victory over Alvernia University (0-1) in a non-conference football matchup Friday night at Ursinus.

How it Happened
  • Ursinus started the game on their own 27 and worked its way down the field to inside the Alvernia 15 yard line. The Golden Wolves then made two stops to force a third down, but a good throw and catch by the Bears put them on the board first, 7-0, with 8:50 left in the quarter.
  • Alvernia went three and out on its first drive of the game on three straight passing attempts before the Bears scored another touchdown just three plays later to make it 14-0 early.
  • The Golden Wolves put together a nice drive on the ensuing possession after a few third down conversions, including a nice one handed catch by Saul Nixon. But, Alvernia stalled out and was forced to punt the football back to Ursinus.
  • Alvernia forced an Ursinus punt on the following drive, but was unable to capitalize and recorded another three and out.
  • The Bears recorded another steady drive down the field, but the Alvernia defense held strong inside their 25 yard line to force an Ursinus field goal and make it 17-0 Bears with 5:55 left in the half.
  • Ursinus then made it 24-0 on a pick six that was deflected at the line and returned for a touchdown.
  • The Bears then scored another touchdown on a 48 yard throw and catch to take a 31-0 lead into the half.
  • Alvernia started the second half with another three and out before the Bears made it 38-0 with a 40 yard touchdown run.
  • The Golden Wolves put together a nice drive after the Ursinus touchdown before Colin Payne avoided the rush and found Dachan Thompson in stride down the sideline for a 41 yard pitch and catch to put Alvernia on the board, 38-7, with 7:40 left in the quarter.
  • Alvernia and Ursinus traded quick drives with each other before the Bears scored their final touchdown of the day after a 66 yard scoring drive made it 45-7 with under 13 minutes to go in the game.
  • Both teams traded quick drives again before the Golden Wolves ripped off a ten play, 72 yard scoring drive that again ended with a Payne touchdown pass to Thompson to make it 45-14 with under four minutes to go.
  • The Bears would run the clock out and secure the 45-14 victory in the season opener.
