Golden Wolves Down Misericordia, 8-4

Reading, Pa. (Jan. 10, 2025) - Alvernia Men's Ice Hockey (6-7-0, 4-5 scored three unanswered goals to secure the 8-4 win in the MAC series opener against Misericordia University (1-8-3, 1-7-2) on Friday night in MAC Men's Ice Hockey action at Body Zone.

The first meeting between Alvernia and Misericordia was a close and back-and-forth matchup up until the final 90 seconds when Alvernia scored three goals to close out the game.

How it Happened
  • Alvernia pressured first with a series of opening shots, but it was the Cougars who struck first early in the sixth minute of action to take a 1-0 lead. Alvernia then had to kill off a penalty just a minute later, and Alvernia goalie Will Augustine made two saves during the power-play to keep the Cougars from adding to their lead.
  • The Golden Wolves started pressuring again in the latter half of the period and were awarded a power-play with three and a half minutes to play in the period. Alvernia took advantage and even the game up at 1-1 as Edvin Robertsson ripped in a shot from just inside the blue line to tie the game with two minutes to play in the period. It remained tied at 1-1 going into the second.
  • Alvernia came into the second period firing as the Golden Wolves worked a power-play opportunity awarded at the end of the first. Alvernia couldn't break through on the power-play, but did break the 1-1 tie as Matthew Davies fired in a shot off the pass of Christian Heckman to give Alvernia the 2-1 lead.
  • The Golden Wolves killed off two penalities over the next ten minutes to maintain the one goal lead, and then added some breathing room with a goal from Riley Egan with two minutes to play in the second. But, the two goal lead didn't last long as Misericordia scored with ten seconds to play in the period to get back within one, 3-2, going into the third.
  • The Cougars carried the momentum from the end of the second into the early parts of the third period and tied the game, 3-3, two and a half minutes into the period.
  • Alvernia called a timeout, regrouped, and retook the lead, 4-3, on Robertsson's second goal of the night.
  • The Golden Wolves then made it a two-goal game, 5-3, on a goal from Joey Arnold with eight minutes to play. But, Misericordia threatened Alvernia's lead a minute later with a goal to get back within one on a delayed penalty with seven minutes to play.
  • Alvernia held off the Cougars for the next five minutes, but Misericordia went empty net coming out of a timeout with two minutes to play, and Alvernia opened the floodgates. Brock Mueller got it started with an empty net goal, and, 22 seconds later, Vincent Servizzi scored an empty netter of his own as he outskated his defender to get one in net.
  • The Cougars put their goalie back in for the final minute, but it didn't stop Alvernia from tacking on one more as Sean Kenny scored with 31 seconds left for the 8-4 final.
