Cedar Falls, IA (January 10, 2025) - Alvernia University recorded a 2-2 record on day one of the NWCA National Duals in men's wrestling action Friday at Northern Iowa's UNI Dome in Cedar Falls, IA.
Match 1: Alvernia recorded a 26-25 victory over Centenary in the opening match of the NWCA National Duals. Centenary tallied victories in the first four weight classes and jumped out to a 19-0 lead early. Alvernia then responded with back to back pins and a tech fall to cut the deficit to 19-17. The Golden Wolves then recorded a major decision and a tech fall in two of the final three matches of the dual to secure the 26-25 victory.
Match 2: The Golden Wolves tallied their second victory of the day after pulling out a very close match to #10 North Central to advance to the quarterfinals. Alvernia fell into another early deficit, a 14-0 deficit after the first three matches before recording four straight victories to swing the lead in favor of the Golden Wolves, 16-14. North Central took the lead back after a victory in the 184 pound match but Alvernia took the lead right back after a
Isaac Kassis decision at 197 to make it 19-18 heading into the final bout.
Mauro Pellot-Vazquez then recorded a huge 9-4 decision in the 285 pound match to secure the 22-18 victory for Alvernia and advance them to the quarterfinals.
Match 3: The Golden Wolves then dropped their third dual match of the day to #1 Wartburg by a score of 41-3.
Keito Shaw was the only Golden Wolf that recorded a victory during the dual.
Match 4: The Golden Wolves dropped its fourth match of the day to Coe by a score of 34-15. Coe jumped out to an early 16-0 lead after the first three matches but then the Golden Wolves ripped off four straight wins between the 149 and 174 pound matches to make it 16-15. Coe then recorded three straight wins in the final three matches to secure the 34-15 victory over the Golden Wolves.
Match 1: Centenary: 25, #11 Alvernia: 26
- Centenary jumped out to an early 9-0 lead after the 125 and 133 pound bouts after Jack Thode recorded a 21-5 tech fall over Julian Zaragoza in the 125 pound bout and James King dropped the 133 pound match to Daniel Haws by major decision, 13-0.
- Centenary pushed the lead to 15-0 after Garrett Gehr dropped the 141 pound match to Joseph Innamorato by fall in 4:10 into the match.
- Centenary made it four in a row after Xavier Pena recorded a 18-5 major decision over Quinn Tobin in the 149 pound match to make it 19-0.
- The Golden Wolves got on the board in the 157 pound match after Chance Babb recorded a pin over Sean Callan in 2:27 in the first round to cut the deficit to 13, 19-6.
- #1 Matthew Lackman tallied a second pin in a row for Alvernia after Lackman took down Mark Venson by fall in 2:10 in the 165 pound bout to make it 19-12 Centenary.
- #2 Nathan Lackman pulled the Golden Wolves within two, 19-17, after a 20-4 tech fall over Centenary's Reece Smith in the 174 pound bout.
- Centenary grabbed one back in the 184 pound bout after Tim Pawlicki flipped Hayden McLellan and recorded a fall in 2:52 to extend the Centenary lead to eight, 25-17 heading into the final two bouts of the match.
- #6 Isaac Kassis pulled the Golden Wolves within four, 25-21 heading into the final bout of the match after Kassis recorded a 13-4 major decision over Aaron Llanas in the 197 pound match.
- Mauro Pellot-Vazquez completed the comeback for the Golden Wolves with a 22-6 tech fall over Alex Laoudis in the 285 pound match to give Alvernia its first and only lead of the dual and secure the 26-25 victory in its first match of the tournament.
Match 2: #10 North Central: 18, #11 Alvernia: 22
- North Central grabbed a 9-0 lead after the first two bouts of the match when #2 Christian Guzman recorded a 17-1 tech fall over Keito Shaw at 125 pounds. North Central's Ethan Spacht then recorded a 10-0 major decision over James King of Alvernia in the 133 pound bout to take the early nine point lead.
- North Central then extended its lead to 14-0 after #13 Bradley Rosen recorded a 18-1 tech fall over Garrett Gehr in the 141 pound bout.
- Chance Babb got the Golden Wolves on the board in the 149 pound match after taking down Tyler Starr by decision, 11-6 to make it 14-3 North Central.
- #13 Jason Rezac pulled the Golden Wolves within five after a victory by fall in 4:52 over Harrison Konder to secure six points in the 157 pound match for Alvernia.
- #1 Matthew Lackman tallied a 5-3 decision over #12 Alex Villar at the 165 pound bout to cut the deficit to just two, 14-12 heading to the 174 pound bout.
- #2 Nathan Lackman gave the Golden Wolves the lead after a 11-1 major decision over #8 Javen Estrada in the 174 pound match and gave Alvernia the 16-14 lead over North Central.
- North Central grabbed the lead back after #13 Payton Geigner recorded a 10-1 major decision over Hayden McLellan in the 184 pound bout and made it 18-16 Cardinals.
- #6 Isaac Kassis then swung the lead back in favor of the Golden Wolves with a 8-2 decision over North Central's Elijah Brockie in the 197 pound match and made it 19-18 heading into the 285 pound bout.
- Mauro Pellot-Vazquez recorded a massive 9-4 decision over #9 Robby Bates in the 285 pound match to secure the 22-18 victory over #10 North Central and advance to the quarterfinals.
Match 3: #1 Wartburg: 41, #11 Alvernia: 3
- #11 Keito Shaw got the Golden Wolves on the board first with a 10-5 decision over #7 James Levy in the 125 pound match to make it 3-0 Alvernia.
- James King then dropped the 133 pound bout to #6 Josh Gervey by fall in 3:19 to give Wartburg the 6-3 lead.
- Wartburg then extended the lead to 11-3 after a 17-1 tech fall over Alvernia's Garrett Gehr in the 141 pound match to push the lead to eight.
- Wartburg then pushed the lead to 15-3 after Chance Babb dropped the 149 pound match to #1 Charlie Dojan by major decision, 14-5.
- Wartburg recorded back to back tech falls at the 157 and 165 pound matches after #4 Blain Christie recorded a 22-6 tech fall over Aiden Swann and then #13 Aiden Brosinski tallied a 22-5 tech fall over Ryan Lepore at 165 pounds. Wartburg extended its lead to 25-3.
- #14 Matt Rogge posted a 10-2 major decision over William Knapp in the 174 pound match which gave Wartburg a 29-3 lead.
- #3 Kasey Ross recorded a 17-1 tech fall over Hayden McLellan at the 184 pound match to make it 34-3 Wartburg.
- #6 Isaac Kassis then fell to #1 Massoma Endene by decision, 5-1, in the 197 pound match to increase the Wartburg lead to 37-3. #5 Mitch Williamson then recorded a 12-0 major decision over Owen Reber to secure the 41-3 victory over the Golden Wolves.
Match 4: #12 Coe: 34, #11 Alvernia: 15
- Coe jumped out to an early 16-0 lead after the first three bouts after recording two tech falls and one fall. #11 Keito Shaw lost by fall to Brayden Parke by fall in 2:57 in the 125 pound bout and James King and Garrett Gehr both lost by tech fall in the 133 and 141 pound matches respectively.
- Chance Babb got the Golden Wolves on the board with a victory over Dresden Grimm by decision, 7-0 to make it 16-3.
- #14 Jason Rezac made it 16-6 after a 12-7 decision over Drake Thompson in the 157 pound match to cut the lead to ten.
- #1 Matthew Lackman recorded a victory by fall over Kael Scranton in 2:33 at the 165 pound match to pull the Golden Wolves within four, 16-12.
- #2 Nathan Lackman made it a one point match after a 12-9 decision over #4 LJ Richardson in the 174 pound match to make it a 16-15 match.
- Coe then recorded victories in the final three matches of the day to secure the 34-15 victory over the Golden Wolves. #11 Jared Voss recorded a victory over Hayden McLellan at the 184 pound match by fall in 2:01. #11 Mathieu Arsenault then won by injury default over #6 Isaac Kassis at the 197 pound match and then Owen Reber fell to Russell Coil by pin in the 285 pound match to secure the 34-15 victory.
