Alvernia and Wilkes Play to 2-2 Tie, Colonels Take Shootout, 2-0

Reading, Pa (January 24, 2025) - Alvernia University (7-9-1, 5-7-1) played to a 2-2 tie with Wilkes University (11-6-1, 11-2-1) Friday night in a MAC men's ice hockey matchup at BodyZone. Wilkes secured the shootout, 2-0.

The Golden Wolves netted goals in the second and third period to send the game to overtime but after a scoreless OT period, the Golden Wolves and Colonels headed to a shootout. Wilkes recorded the 2-0 shootout victory.

How it Happened
  • Wilkes started the game holding steady possession through the early minutes of the first period, sending in six shots through the first three minutes.
  • Alvernia was hit with a tripping penalty just over three minutes into the game, but it was the Golden Wolves who had a good look on net. Alvernia's Joey Arnold had a breakaway look, but missed the net. Easton Inglis came in to grab the loose puck and sent in a shot himself, but it was saved by the Wilkes goalie. Alvernia killed off the remainder of the penalty without issue.
  • The Colonels broke through early in the ninth minute. Wilkes stole the puck off the blue line and took it to the net. Wilkes' Christian Blomquist took it to the goal and flipped the puck over the pad of Alvernia goalie Jacob Stern to give Wilkes the early 1-0 lead.
  • Alvernia got some pressure on the Colonels late in the period, sending in seven shots in the final five minutes of the period. But, the Wilkes defense held up and took the 1-0 lead into the second.
  • The Golden Wolves leveled the score in the first three minutes of the second period after Sean Kenny and Joey Arnold assisted Frazer Dodd to make it a 1-1 game early in the second period.
  • Alvernia continued to attack the Wilkes goal and sent ten shots on goal to Wilkes' four but an Alvernia tripping penalty in the final two minutes of the period gave the Colonels an advantage late in the period. Just under a minute into the powerplay, Wilkes' Patrick Roginski found the stick of Miles Harrington who found the back of the net to give the Colonels a 2-1 advantage heading into the final intermission.
  • Alvernia came out of the intermission and pressured the Wilkes net, sending seven shots at the Colonels goal before Owen Noll put the puck in the back of the net thanks to an assist from Dodd which tied the game up at two a piece with just over 14 minutes to go in regulation.
  • The Golden Wolves had a chance to find the winner in the final three minutes of the period after a Wilkes penalty the Golden Wolves went on the powerplay. Just under a minute into the penalty, Wilkes were assessed an interference penalty that awarded Alvernia a penalty shot. Sean Kenny skated to center ice to take the shot for Alvernia but was denied by the Wilkes goaltender, Jack Perna to keep the game leveled at two with under three to play.
  • Wilkes was then assessed another penalty with 1:48 to play in the third period which put the Golden Wolves on a 5 on 3 advantage for 22 seconds and would keep Alvernia on a power play until the end of the period. Alvernia sent six shots at the Wilkes goal but could not find the game winner as the game headed to the overtime period locked at two.
  • The Golden Wolves tallied nine shots with four going on goal in the overtime period but continued to struggle to get the puck past Perna as the game headed for a shootout after 65 minutes of hockey. Wilkes put two shots on goal in the OT period but Alvernia's Jacob Stern saved both of them to keep the game tied.
  • Wilkes took the first shootout attempt and Nick Swain bested Stern and put the puck into the back of the net to put the Colonels up 1-0.
  • Edvin Robertsson took the first attempt for the Golden Wolves but was denied by Perna. Patrick Roginski took the second attempt for Wilkes but could not get the puck past Stern.
  • Frazer Dodd took the second shootout attempt for the Golden Wolves but again, could not get it past Wilkes' Jack Perna as Wilkes held a 1-0 lead on the shootout with just one round remaining.
  • Matt Carlson skated to center ice for Wilkes and grabbed the puck and put it past Stern to secure the 2-0 shootout victory for the Colonels.
