Golden Wolves and Colonels Tie 2-2, Alvernia Took the Shootout, 1-0

Reading, Pa (January 25, 2025) - Alvernia University (7-9-2, 5-7-2) played to a 2-2 draw with Wilkes University (11-6-2, 11-2-2) for the second straight night in a MAC men's ice hockey clash Saturday afternoon at BodyZone.

The Golden Wolves took the shootout 1-0 in the fifth round of shootouts. Neither team could find the back of the net in the first 40 minutes of the game but both offenses exploded in the third period for two goals a piece but neither team could find the winner as it headed to OT. Both teams again could not put the puck in the net as it headed to a shootout for the second straight night. Joey Arnold then recorded the shootout winning attempt in the fifth round of shootouts to secure the shootout victory for Alvernia.

How it Happened
  • A scoreless first period was highlighted by the Golden Wolves outshooting the Colonels 18-14 with Alvernia sending nine on target.
  • The Golden Wolves also dominated the draw, taking 12 of the 17 faceoffs including the first 11 but could not find a way to put the puck into the back of the net as the game headed to the first intermission locked at zero.
  • The Colonels flipped the script in the second period and took control of the offensive zone and recorded 26 total shots to Alvernia's 12, but Wilkes only recorded two more shots on goal than the Golden Wolves with an 11-9 advantage. Wilkes also had two powerplay attempts but were unable to get the puck by Jacob Stern as the Golden Wolves and the Colonels headed to the final intermission still tied at zero.
  • The Golden Wolves broke the game open in the first three minutes of the third period after Edvin Robertsson fired the puck into the back of the net. Lucas Ochitwa connected with Will White who then found the stick of Robertson, Robertson then fired the puck past the goalie and inside the left post to give Alvernia a 1-0 advantage.
  • Wilkes tied the game up nine minutes later when Cam Lowe tallied an unassisted goal to make it a 1-1 game with under nine to play in the third period.
  • The Colonels then grabbed the lead two minutes later when Cole Jungwirth assisted Matt Carlson to give Wilkes a 2-1 lead with 6:49 to play in the period.
  • The Golden Wolves found the leveler with 1:08 to play in regulation after Sawyer Senio assisted Christian Heckman who found the back of the net and tied the game at two late in the third period. Wilkes had one look at the Alvernia net in the final 30 seconds but Stern held strong to deny the Colonels and send the game to OT for the second straight night.
  • Wilkes tallied more shots in a scoreless overtime period with six going on goal to Alvernia's four but neither team was able to find the winner as the game headed to a shootout for the second night in a row.
  • The Golden Wolves and the Colonels traded misses back and forth for the first four shootout rounds with both goalies making saves in all four rounds. Wilkes's Cam Lowe was then also denied by Stern which gave Alvernia's Joey Arnold a chance to win it.
  • Arnold grabbed the puck at center ice and seemed to have slipped up a bit but it did not matter, Arnold took the puck toward the Wilkes goal and flipped the puck past the tender and into the back of the net to secure the 1-0 shootout victory for the Golden Wolves.
