Alvernia Falls to Widener, 32-14

Reading, Pa. (Oct. 25, 2025) - Alvernia University (0-7, 0-6) dropped a 32-14 decision to Widener University (3-4, 2-4) on Saturday afternoon in MAC Football action at Alvernia.

The Pride jumped out to a 25-0 lead at the half, utilizing three first half turnovers by Alvernia to build its lead. The Golden Wolves then outscored the Pride 14-7 in the second half, but Widener's first half lead was too much for Alvernia to overcome.

How it Happened
  • After Alvernia had to punt its first possession away, the Pride got right to work with a 52-yard completion up the middle from Caiden Leszynski to Marquell Perry. The Pride picked up three more first downs as the worked their way down the field, and Widener found the end zone on a Finn Whittle 2-yard rush up the middle. Widener missed the extra point, but the 10-play, 95-yard drive gave the Pride the 6-0 lead.
  • Alvernia was working its way down the field on the ensuing drive, utilizing a 20-yard rush by Jayden Stanfield and a pair of  double-digit gains by Andrew Simmons to get down the Widener 3-yard line. But, Alvernia fumbled on a quarterback rush up the middle, and the Pride recovered for a touchback.
  • Widener got the ball back with just over three minutes remaining in the opening quarter, and once again began working its way down the field. Alvernia had Widener in a third-and-long situation, but the Pride converted a 48-yard pass down the field as Perry made an acrobatic catch along the Widener sideline to move the chains and push the game into the second quarter. Three plays into the second frame, Widener took the 13-0 lead on a 4-yard keeper for Leszynski to make it a 13-0 game.
  • Widener quickly made it a 20-0 game after a pick-six by Luke Shimko for the Pride. Shimko picked Alvernia off at the Alvernia 31-yard line. Shimko then ran it the full 31-yards back to give the Pride the 20-0 lead.
  • Widener kept it rolling and scored on a safety on its next drive to take a 22-0 lead with 9:17 to play in the opening half.
  • Widener then received the free kick off the safety at their own 35-yard line. Widener converted a 2nd and 16  with an 18-yard rush and moved into Alvernia territory on a 28-yard completion. Alvernia stopped the Pride's momentum with a sack for a 7-yard loss by Jacob Keglovits, forcing the Pride to settle for a field goal. Widener converted the 41-yard attempt to take a 25-0 lead with 4:05 to play.
  • Alvernia got the ball back and a pair of rushes by Stanfield and Dante Viccharelli gave Alvernia a first down at its own 34-yard line. An Ozmere Jones 9-yard rush, followed by a 29-yard completion from Viccharelli to Jones put Alvernia down at the Widener 28-yard line. But, Alvernia's drive stalled out from there and the Golden Wolves had a turnover on downs. Widener then took a knee to take the game into the half with a 25-0 lead.
  • Alvernia forced punts on Widener's first two drives of the second half, and Alvernia took over deep in its own territory with 9:07 remaining in the third quarter. A pair of 13-yard and 10-yard completions from Viccharelli to Jayden Smith gave Alvernia two first downs early in the drive. Three straight rushes by the Golden Wolves moved the chains once again, and a 16-yard rush by Stanfield later in the drive moved Alvernia into Widener territory. The Golden Wolves then picked up another first down on an 11-yard reception from Viccharelli to Stanfield on 4th down. Alvernia then got the ball on the 7-yard line following a horse collar call against the Pride on the play. Three plays later, Viccharelli called his own number and rushed it in for an 8-yard touchdown run to put Alvernia on the board. The Golden Wolves missed the PAT as Widener held the 25-6 lead with 40 seconds to play in the third quarter. The scoring drive went 16-plays, 90 yards, and lasted nearly eight and a half minutes.
  • Widener answered with a touchdown drive of its own to open the fourth quarter. Widener capped off a 16-play, 8:19 drive with a 1-yard rush up the middle for the final yard of a 75-yard drive. The Pride took a 32-6 lead with 7:12 to play.

Gonzalez then found Stanfield once again for a 5-yard completion up the middle for an Alvernia touchdown.
