Lions Lead After Day One of the Yocum Cup

Mohnton, Pa. (October 27, 2025) - Alvernia University and Albright University kicked off the annual Yocum Cup Monday with the fourball matches at Alvernia's home course, LedgeRock Golf Club with the Lions taking a 3.5-0.5 lead over the Golden Wolves.

Monday marked the 21st playing of the Yocum Cup which is a match play event between Albright and Alvernia's men's golf teams. The event mimics the Ryder Cup and this year consisted of four better ball matches on day one and then ten singles matches on Wednesday at Reading Country Club, totalling 14 points up for grabs.

Albright currently holds the Yocum Cup and needs seven points to retain the cup and Alvernia looks to claim the cup back after Albright recorded wins in 2023 and 2024.

How it Happened
  • The first four ball match of the day was Alvernia's team of Chase Smith and Matthew Gagliardi vs. Albright's Nontaphat Veratecha and Jonatan Liljeblad. The Lions took down the Golden Wolves in the first match by a score of 5 & 4. Veratecha and Liljeblad grabbed a five up lead after the first six holes and never looked back as they recorded a birdie two on the 14th hole to close out the match five up with four holes to go and grab the first point of the Yocum Cup.
  • The second match was Alvernia's Zachary Neuin and Jakob Chapman vs. Charles Bailey and August Fredrik Alhanko and was the only match of the day that was halved. The Golden Wolves started things off with a two up lead after the first three holes but the Lions flipped the script and won four of the next six holes to take a two up lead as they made the turn. The Golden Wolves responded by winning the tenth hole and the 12th to even the match up before winning the 14th to take a one up lead heading to the final four holes of the match. Albright came back and won the 16th hole to level the match before the Golden Wolves took the 17th to take a one up lead into the 18th hole but the Lions took the 18th to level the match and halve the match to give Alvernia its first points of the cup.
  • The third match of the day was between Kenton Lightburn and Shawn Williams from Alvernia and Filip Hjerten and Sam Elsen with the Lions coming out on top, one up. The Golden Wolves grabbed the early lead after taking the first hole but the Lions bounced back with back to back wins at two and three. The next four holes were halved before Albright took the eighth hole but Alvernia responded with a par at the ninth to cut the lead to one up after nine holes. Albright then pushed the lead to as many as three after the 15th hole but Williams and Lightburn would not go away as they cut the lead to just one heading into the 18th hole after winning holes 14 and 17. Alvernia could not complete the comeback as the 18th hole was halved and the pairing of Elsen and Hjerten secured the one up victory.
  • The final match to tee off on day one was Alvernia's Jacob DeWitt and Matthew Overholt vs. Albright's Evan Twyman and Federico Cobos Kallmann. Twyman and Kallmann recorded a 6 & 5 victory over Alvernia's DeWitt and Overholt to grab a point for Albright. The Lions took four of the first six holes of the match to take a four up lead heading to the back nine. Twyman and Kallmann then recorded back to back birdies on 12 and 13 to close the match out six up with five holes to play.
