Golden Wolves Fall to Blazers at the Buzzer, 90-88

Frederick, Md (February 18, 2025) - Alvernia University (15-9, 7-6) fell to Hood College (16-8, 9-4) 90-88, after the Blazers hit a three at the buzzer Tuesday night in a MAC Commonwealth men's basketball clash at Hood.

The Blazers fended off a career night from Janye Stanley who recorded 37 points and knocked down nine three pointers, which ties the single game record.

Hood held a four point, 37-41 lead after the first 20 minutes of action and pushed the lead to as much as eight in the second half but the Golden Wolves fought back to grab a seven point, 86-79 with under three to go. The Blazers then ended the game on an 11-2 scoring run to secure the victory.

How it Happened
  • Alvernia and Hood traded points back and forth for the first five minutes of the first half with the Blazers taking a 8-7 lead.
  • A Hood three pointer sparked a run that pushed the Hood lead to four, 17-13, but a Jacob Stoudt three and a Janye Stanley jumper gave the Golden Wolves the one point, 18-17 lead with under ten to play in the first half.
  • The Blazers responded by ripping off a 17-9 scoring run over the next five minutes that swung the lead back in their favor, 34-27 with under five to play in the half.
  • A Robert Cottrell three jump started the Golden Wolves into a 10-7 scoring run over the final four minutes of the first half to cut the Hood lead to four, 41-37 heading into the break.
  • Stanley led the way offensively for the Golden Wolves with nine points, Cottrell added eight and Elijah Hamilton and Kareem Diaz both tallied seven.
  • The Golden Wolves shot 36% from the floor in the first half, 30% from beyond the arc and grabbed 21 rebounds but only held the lead for three of the 20 minutes in the first half.
  • The Blazers came out of the half and extended the lead to eight in the first three minutes of the second half and forced the Golden Wolves to burn an early second half timeout down 50-42.
  • The Golden Wolves came out flying after the timeout. An Elijah Hamilton layup sparked a 10-0 scoring run over the next two minutes with two threes from Stanley, Alvernia took a 52-50 lead. It was the first lead for the Golden Wolves since the ten minute mark in the first half.
  • The Blazers and the Golden Wolves would trade buckets back and forth for the next seven minutes with Alvernia still holding a two point, 68-66 lead thanks to Stanley's three buckets from beyond the arc.
  • Hood then knocked down a three ball to cap a 13-11 scoring stretch that tied the game up at 79 with four minutes to play in the game.
  • Alvernia came out hot from a Hood timeout with Stanley knocking down a pull up jumper, Robert Mullan hit a pair of free throws and Stanley hit another three pointer to cap a 7-0 scoring run and give Alvernia a seven point, 86-79 advantage with under three to play.
  • The Blazers responded with a 7-2 scoring run after a few costly Alvernia turnovers and missed free throws saw Hood knock a three down with 25 seconds to go to pull within two, 88-86.
  • Another Alvernia turnover and a foul sent the Blazers head to the line but Hood recorded just one from the line as the Golden Wolves still held a one point, 88-87 advantage with 11 seconds to go.
  • The Golden Wolves missed a free throw at the other end with six seconds to play and gave Hood life after the Blazers called a timeout with five seconds remaining.
  • Hood inbounded the ball to Garrett Cox, he brought the ball up the length of the court and pulled up from the beyond the arc with Hamilton's hand in his face, the ball bounced off the front of the rim, around off the glass and then down to give the Blazers the 90-88 victory over the Golden Wolves.
