Golden Wolves Down Cougars, 6-3

Alvernia Secures Series Sweep of Cougars

Wilkes-Barre, Pa. (Feb. 8, 2025) - Alvernia University (10-10-2, 8-8-2) scored three unanswered goals to take a 6-3 win over Misericordia University (3-13-3, 3-12-2) on Saturday night in MAC men's ice hockey action in Wilkes-Barre.

The Cougars led 2-0 early before Alvernia evened it at 2-2 in the final second of the second period. Alvernia and Misericordia were then tied at 3-3 two minutes into the third. Alvernia broke the tie on a power-play goal from Vincent Servizzi, and scored two more later in the third to take the 6-3 win and secure the series sweep over Misericordia.

How it Happened
  • The Cougars peppered Alvernia in the early minutes and had the first power play opportunity of the game after Alvernia was called for interference three minutes into the game. Misericordia sent in three shots during its power play before the power play transitioned to a four on four after Misericordia was called for roughing. The four on four ended without a goal scored, as did Alvernia's power play opportunity.
  • Alvernia was awarded another power play opportunity with nine minutes to play in the opening period. Patrick Del Vecchio had a great look a minute and half into the power play, but Misericordia goalie Jacob Perrin made a great glove save to stop the shot and keep Alvernia off the board.
  • The first period ended with neither team able to find the back of the net. The Cougars outshot Alvernia 25-17 overall in the first 20 minutes, and 9-8 on net.
  • Much how they started the first period, the Cougars came out firing in the opening minutes of the second period as well. Misericordia was also awarded a power play opportunity three minutes into the period after Alvernia was called for boarding. This time, the Cougars broke through. Misericordia's Zach Ross took the puck behind the net after bringing it down the ice and quickly passed it in front of the goal to Jack Tos. Tos quickly fired a shot past Alvernia's Jacob Stern to give the Cougars the 1-0 lead 3:43 into the second.
  • Alvernia came out of the ensuing faceoff and fired five shots in 45 seconds. Misericordia made the stops to hold onto its lead.
  • The Golden Wolves got their first power play opportunity of the period 6:17 into the second. That power play ran out with just one shot on goal for Alvernia. But, just 10 seconds after it ended, Misericordia was called for another penalty to send the Golden Wolves right back on the power play. Alvernia added just one more shot on goal during that power play as Misericordia continued to hold the 1-0 lead through the midpoint of the second.
  • The Cougars were awarded their second power play opportunity of the second period with eight minutes to play, and Misericordia took advantage again. The Cougars had just nine seconds left on the power play when Brendan Vettraino scored a short-side shot that went under Stern to give Misericordia the 2-0 lead with six and a half minutes to play in the period.
  • Alvernia answered and got on the board with five minutes to play in the period when Will White and Owen Noll connected with Frazer Dodd, who flipped a shot in between the goalie and left post to make it a 2-1 game.
  • The game was poised to head into the third with Misericordia holding the 2-1 lead, but Alvernia was awarded a power play with ten seconds in the period. And, with 0.9 seconds on the clock.Owen Noll scored on a shot that went off the back of the goalie and into the net to even the game at 2-2.
  • The third period started out with an early four on four, and Alvernia broke the 2-2 tie with Easton Inglis firing in a shot from along the boards off the pass of Lucas Ochitwa. But, Alvernia's lead did not last long as Misericordia tied it at 3-3 just over a minute later.
  • Alvernia broke the 3-3 tie on another power play goal as Vincent Servizzi scored on a shot right in front of the net off the assist of Del Vecchio with 14 minutes to play.
  • Alvernia then gained some breathing room and took a 5-3 lead as Dodd fired in a shot just about 30 seconds after Alvernia killed off a penalty.
  • The Cougars called a timeout with 2:11 to play and went empty net coming out of the stoppage. Alvernia scored an empty-netter with 90 seconds to play as Jack Natyshak connected with Riley Egan for the 6-3 lead. The Golden Wolves did not allow a shot the rest of the way as they secured the 6-3 win and another three points for conference standings.
