Four Golden Wolves Earn All-American Honors, Advance to Day Two of 2025 NCAA Division III Championship

Providence, RI, (March 14, 2025) - A total of four Alvernia Men's Wrestlers earned All-American honors to lead Alvernia on day one of the 2025 NCAA Division III Men's Wrestling National Championship, hosted by Johnson and Wales University at the Amica Mutual Pavilion in Providence, Rhode Island.

Both Matthew Lackman and Nathan Lackman went undefeated on Friday, advancing to Saturday's semifinal round. Keito Shaw and Mauro Pellot-Vazquez bounced back from earlier losses to stay alive through Friday and into the consolation quarterfinals on Saturday. Shaw also picked up his 100th career win to close out his Friday night session. 

Alvernia is in 7th place with 39 points heading into Saturday. The Golden Wolves are just five points out of the top five.

How it Happened  - Friday Session 1
  • Keito Shaw started his day with a bye in championship round one, and then faced off against #2 Christian Guzman from North Central. Guzman recorded a 19-4 tech fall over Shaw to drop him to the consolation bracket. Shaw then received a bye to advance to the evening session. 
  • Chance Babb received a bye in the first round and then took on #1 seeded Hayden Brown from Johnson and Wales. Babb dropped a hard fought, 6-0 decision to Brown to fall to the consolation bracket. Babb then took on Evan Lindner from Wahsington and Lee and wrestled yet another tough match but would fall to Lindner by decision, 5-2. 
  • Jason Rezac earned a bye in the first round of the 157 pound bracket but then fell to #1 seeded Michael Petrella from Baldwin Wallace. Rezac then dropped his first consolation match to Casey Smith from Washington and Jefferson by major decision, 17-7. 
  • Matthew Lackman got his day started with a 4-0 decision over Josh Heuss from Wisconsin Stevens Point to advance to the second round of the championship bracket. Lackman then recorded a 4-1 sudden victory over North Central's Alex Villar to move onto the Friday night session and advance to the 165 pound quarterfinals. 
  • Nathan Lackman got things going early with a 18-4 major decision over Western New England's Cam Hines in the first round and then advanced to the 174 pound quarterfinals after Xavier Preston from Roanoke was forced to injury default. 
  • Mauro Pellot-Vazquez dropped his first match of the day to Wartburg's Mitch Williamson by decision, 5-1 to drop to the wrestleback rounds. Pellot-Vazquez then received a bye in the first round of the consolation bracket before recording a 18-9 major decision over Myles Johnson from Ohio Northern to advance to the Friday night session.
How it Happened - Friday Session 2
  • Keito Shaw started his evening session with a big time bounce back victory over Ithaca's Tomah Gummow. Shaw made quick work of Gummow, and recorded a 16-0 tech fall in the first period to advance to the fourth round of the consolation bracket. Shaw then ended his night with a bang. Sitting at 99 career wins, Shaw took on Isaic Paulino of Roanoke in the blood round. Paulino nearly took Shaw down in the third period, but Shaw reversed him and quickly pinned him to secure his ticket to Saturday, his All-American honors, and his 100th career win.
  • Matthew Lackman took on Springfield's Jake Deguire in the 165 lb quarterfinal bout. Lackman picked up an early three points with a first period takedown. Neither wrestling could get anything going the rest of the way, and Lackman rode his early points to a 4-1 win after picking up one last point for riding time. He earned his fourth career All-American honor with the quarterfinal win.
  • Nathan Lackman took on Dejon Glaster of Millikin in his quarterfinal bout. After a scoreless first period, Lackman opened the scoring with two points off a reversal. But, Glaster took the lead, 4-3, on an escape and takedown as the bout headed into the third period. Glaster built his lead up to 5-3 on an escape to open the third period. But, Lackman did not go down without a fight and was able to gain enough control with 19 seconds left to earn three takedown points and secure the 6-5 quarterfinal win. With the win, Lackman earned his third All-American honor, and first with Alvernia. 
  • Mauro Pellot-Vazquez started session two with a pin in 3:10 of SUNY Brockport's Nick Franco. Frano and Pellet-Vazquez traded points in the first period. But, Pellot-Vazquez was able to pin Franco coming out of the second period restart. Pellot-Vazquez advanced to the blood round, where he drew USMMA's Reid Garrison. Pellot-Vazquez picked up a quick seven points on a takedown and nearfall. Pellot-Vazquez then took complete control and pinned Garrison in 1:07 to advance to Saturday and earn his first All-American honor.

  • Keito Shaw: Shaw will face Brayden Parke of Coe College on Saturday morning in the consolation quarterfinals. Parke is unseeded, and was not ranked in the final NWCA rankings.
  • Matthew Lackman: Lackman will face Baldwin Wallace's Andrew Supers in the semifinal round at 165 lbs. Supers is the fifth seed, and was ranked 11th in the final NWCA rankings. Supers defeated defending 165 lbs National Champion Nicholas Sacco in the quarterfinals.
  • Nathan Lackman: Lackman will face Augsburg's Seth Goetzinger in the 174 lb semifinal. Goetzinger is the 7th seed and was ranked sixth in the final NWCA rankings. Goetzinger upset the #2 seed by 8-2 decision in the quarterfinal to advance to the semifinal.
  • Mauro Pellot-Vazquez: Pellot-Vazquez will take on RIT's Josh Harkless in the consolation quarterfinals. Harkless upset the #1 seed, Michael Douglass, in the blood round to advance to Saturday. Harkless is the #3 seed and was ranked third in the final NWCA rankings.
