Golden Wolves Drop Non-Conference Matchup to Gothic Knights, 18-13

Jersey City, N.J. (March 19, 2025) - Alvernia University (7-9) fell to New Jersey City University (7-3-1) 18-13, in a non-conference baseball matchup Wednesday afternoon at NJCU.

How it Happened
  • After a scoreless first inning for both sides, and scoreless second for Alvernia, the Gothic Knights struck first in the bottom of the second. NJCU hit a leadoff double to open up the inning, and then brought the leadoff man home on a two-out double later in the inning.
  • Alvernia answered in the top of the third. Mike Pulcini led off the inning with a single through the left side. He then progressed to third on back-to-back ground outs by Noah Waldron and Jake Chapman. Pulcini then scored on an RBI double by Logan Nelson.
  • The tie game did not last long as the Knights put up six runs on five hits in their half of the third to take a 7-1 lead through three innings.
  • Alvernia got two runs back in the top of the fourth. Jack Zabarsky led off the inning by getting hit by a pitch, and stole second two batters later. After advancing to third on a balk, Zabarsky came around and scored during the at-bat of Mike Mele. Later in the inning, Waldron drove in Christopher Babkowski on a sacrifice fly to make it a 7-3 game going into the bottom of the fourth.
  • NJCU tacked onto its lead in its half of the fourth. The Gothic Knights scored their first of the inning on an Alvernia error, and added two more on a two-run home run. An RBI double into the right center gap capped off the inning and pushed the lead to eight, 11-3.
  • Alvernia pulled within four in the top half of the fifth inning after an Evan Thomas RBI single into left center and then Timmy Hitchcock smoked a three run homer in the left center gap to make it an 11-7 ballgame.
  • After a scoreless bottom of the fifth, NJCU pushed its lead back to seven after tallying three runs in the bottom of the sixth. An RBI single started things off and then a run was able to score via an Alvernia balk. The Gothic Knights added the third run of the inning after an RBI single to left to make it a 14-7 lead.
  • NJCU added on another four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning after two RBI singles pushed the lead to 16-7. The Gothic Knights then pushed the lead to 18-7 after a two RBI single made it an 11 run game.
  • The Golden Wolves cut it to a ten run game thanks to a Ryan Buckley RBI double to left scored Luke Jones to make it 18-8.
  • Alvernia rallied in the top of the ninth and pushed five runs across the plate. Nathan Seidel started things off with a RBI double down the left field line and then Nicolas Piermarini ripped a two RBI triple into the right center gap to make it a 18-11 game.
  • Justin Dorety followed with an RBI double to center and then Buckley capped the scoring with an RBI double to left but it was not enough as the Gothic Knights held on for the 18-13 victory over the Golden Wolves.
