Strong Pitching Powers Alvernia to Series-Opening Win Over Eastern, 9-2

Reading, Pa. (April 4th, 2025) - Alvernia University (14-11, 7-3) used strong pitching and situational hitting to take a 9-2 win over Eastern University (10-16, 3-7) in game one of its MAC Commonwealth series with the Eagles on a warm afternoon in Angelica Park on Thursday.

Despite playing at home, Alvernia began the series as the designated away team. The Golden Wolves took advantage of a strong pitching performance by Chris Sasso to start the series . Sasso dealt for seven strong innings, striking out eight and only allowing two runs to put the Alvernia offense in a good position. The Golden Wolves were able to scratch runs across in four innings, scoring nine runs total. Alvernia also out-hit Eastern 13-7.

How It Happened
  • Both teams went the first two frames without scoring a run. That changed in the top of the third when Alvernia struck first. Mike Pulcini started the inning with a leadoff walk, then later stole second base. Jake Chapman then delivered a hard hit single up the middle, scoring Pulcini from second base. An Eastern error allowed Chapman to move into scoring position, and Evan Thomas then drove him in on a single to left field, giving Alvernia a 2-0 lead.
  • Eastern responded later in the home half of the fourth. Two singles allowed runners to be placed on the corners. The Eagles then ended up scoring on a stolen base attempt, allowing the Golden Wolves to get the runner at second and cutting the lead in half making it 2-1.
  • The Golden Wolves did not hesitate to answer, putting up a three spot in the top of the fifth. RJ Emrich got things started with a leadoff single through the left side. Pulcini followed it up with a perfectly placed bunt down the third base line, forcing a tough throw that sailed up the right field line. Emrich came all the way around to score and Pulcini advanced all the way to third.
  • As the inning rolled on, Nathan Seidel then drove in Pulcini, with a single through the right side. He then went first to third on a sacrifice bunt from Chapman. Logan Nelson then cashed in, driving in Seidel with a sacrifice fly to center field to give the Golden Wolves a 5-1 lead.
  • Eastern got one more run on the board in the bottom half of the sixth inning. A leadoff double, an Alvernia error, and an RBI single through the left side would make the score 5-2.
  • Alvernia answered back immediately once again, putting together two more runs in the top of the seventh. A Quincy Esannason leadoff walk with a stolen base to follow, and then an Eastern error, allowed him to come around and score. Jack Zabarksy then stepped up with men on and two outs, driving an RBI double to left center to give the Golden Wolves a strong 7-2 lead heading into the seventh inning stretch.
  • The Golden Wolves added two more insurance runs in the top of the eighth.  Harold Ivery III started things off with a double down the right field line. Gerald Debalko then then drove him in with a single to right field.  A walk and a single loaded the bases for Alvernia, giving Nelson the chance to drive in one more with his second sacrifice fly of the game making the score 9-2.
  • Shane Mcdermott and Logan Solomine each threw a scoreless inning to close out game one and put the Golden Wolves out in front heading into Friday's doubleheader.
