Alvernia Opens 2025 with Tri-Match Split

Scranton, Pa. (Aug. 30, 2025) - Alvernia Women's Volleyball (1-1) splits its opening-day tri-match on Saturday, picking up a win against Penn State Schuylkill (0-2) and dropping a match to host Marywood University (2-0). 

Alvernia fell to the host Pacers in the opening match of the day in straight sets. After falling to Penn State Schuylkill in the first set of its second match of the day, Alvernia rebounded and won the next three sets for the 3-1 win. The win over Penn State marked Alvernia's first under head coach Micaela Sensenig

How it Happened - Match 1: Marywood 3, Alvernia 0
  • The Pacers got off to a quick 2-0 lead, but Alvernia tied it up at 4-4 on an ace by Olivia Rohrbaugh. Marywood broke the early tie on a kill that sparked a five-point run and gave the Pacers a 9-4 lead.
  • Alvernia worked its way back within one, 14-13, on a Marywood error. After a back-and-forth over the next few points, Alvernia tied the set at 18-18 on an ace by Allie Evangelista. The Golden Wolves then took the lead, 21-20, a few points later on a kill by Allison Wolf.
  • Alvernia continued to lead the opening set, 22-21, but Marywood scored four unanswered to secure the 25-22 first set win.
  • Marywood again took the opening points of the second set and led 8-5 early. Alvernia scored four of the next six points to get within one, 10-9, but Marywood went on a run of its own to extend its lead to five, 15-10.
  • With the Pacers pushing their lead to six, 19-13, Alvernia went on a four point run that was capped off by an Evangelista ace to get within two, 19-17. But, just like the first set, the Pacers pulled away late with a 5-2 run to take the second set, 25-20.
  • After an early back-and-forth in the third set, Marywood scored 11 straight points to take the set, 25-9, and the match, 3-0.

  • Alvernia took the opening point of the match on a kill by Wolf in set one and led 2-1 early after a Penn State attack error. After a 4-4 tie a few points later, Penn State rattled off four straight to take an 8-4 lead. The Lions led the rest of the way and took set one, 25-20.
  • The Lions got off to a fast start in set two and took a 4-1 early lead. Alvernia bounced back with a kill by McDevitt and a Wolf ace. A block from Aubrey Mundy and Angelina Salara tied the set at 4-4.
  • The Lions retook the lead and pushed it to four points, 10-6, but Alvernia responded with a 7-0 run off the serve of Marli Emrich to take a 13-10 lead.
  • The Lions threatened and got within two, 16-14, but an Evangelista kill and ace made it 18-14. The Golden Wolves then scored seven of the next nine points to take the set, 25-17.
  • The Golden Wolves had to battle back from a 6-2 deficit in set three. A 6-1 run, which included two two kills from Evangelista and four attack errors by the Lions, gave Alvernia the 8-7 lead.
  • The Lions retook the lead, 9-8, but Alvernia rattled off seven straight points to take a 15-9 lead. The 7-0 run included three aces by McDevitt.
  • Alvernia then capped off the set with eight straight points and four straight kills to take the set, 25-13, and  2-1 match lead. 
  • TPenn State led the fourth set early, 10-4, but Alvernia picked up four straight points to get within two, 10-8.
  • Alvernia tied the set at 12-12 on a Lion's attack error and took the lead, 13-12, on a kill by Mundy. Alvernia built its lead up to three, 15-12, before the Lions tied it back up at 15-15.
  • Four straight points by Alvernia, including back-to-back aces by Wolf, gave Alvernia back the lead, 19-15. 
  • Alvernia led the fourth set late, 22-19, but the Lions held on and tied it at 22-22. Alvernia then had a service error on set-point, and the Lions tied it at 24-24 on an ace. Alvernia then secured the set and match win on a kill by McDevitt and a Lions' attack error.

  • Allison Wolf led Alvernia with 13 kills on 46 attacks.
  • Hailey McDevitt led Alvernia with a .350 attack percentage with eight kills on 20 attacks. She also finished with a team-high 18 assists and five aces.
  • Caroline Buggy led Alvernia with 30 digs.
