Golden Wolves Drop MAC Opener at Eastern, 24-14

St. David's, Pa. (Sep. 13, 2025) - Alvernia University (0-2, 0-1) dropped its 2025 conference-opener to Eastern University (2-0, 1-0) by a 24-14 decision on Saturday afternoon in MAC football action at Eastern's Radnor Street Road Field.

The Eagles scored a touchdown in the first and second quarter, utilizing a dominant run game to take a 14-0 lead at the half. Alvernia outscored the Eagles in the second-half, 14-10, but Eastern's early lead was too much for Alvernia to overcome.

Eastern finished with 361 yards of offense and 329 of those yards came on the ground. Alvernia won the turnover battle with three interceptions, which ties the program record for interceptions in a game.

How it Happened
  • The Golden Wolves and Eagles traded early drives. Alvernia had an early three and out, and gave the Eagles the ball for the first time at the Alvernia 43 yard line. After a 20-yard rush to open the Eastern's first drive, the Golden Wolves got the ball back on a McCabe Piavis interception.
  • Alvernia was forced to punt again, and the Eagles got back to work on their own 29-yard line. Eastern picked up a first down on a 17-yard completion from Brett Nabb to Chris Rivera, but were forced into a 1st and 20 on a holding call. The Golden Wolves had the Eagles at a 3rd and 18, but Eastern got to a 4th and 1 on a 17-yard keeper by Nabb. Eastern opted to go for it and picked up the first down on a 4-yard rush. Three plays later, Eastern found the end zone on a 22 yard rush by Jeremiah Avrilien to take a 7-0 lead with 7:06 to play.
  • Both teams traded punts as the game moved into the second quarter. Alvernia was forced to punt it away on its first drive of the second quarter and the Eagles picked up on their own 33-yard line. Eastern worked its way down the field and found the end zone on a 25-yard rush. But, the rush was called back and the touchdown was taken off the board after Eastern was called for a hold. Nabb then fumbled on the next play, which pushed the Eagles back to the other side of the 50 and into a 3rd and 37 yard situation. The Golden Wolves forced the punt and took over on their own 28, but Alvernia was unable to capitalize and punted the ball right back to the Eagles.
  • Eastern opened up its next drive with a 39-yard run by Nabb. The Eagles had two lengthy pick-ups in addition to Nabb's nearly 40-yard opening run, but both gains were called back for penalties. Eastern worked its way back from both penalties and found its way into the end zone on a nine-yard rush by Nabb to make it a 14-0 game..
  • Alvernia got the ball back on its own 35-yard line with just under two minutes to play in the first half. After picking up a first down early in the drive, Alvernia went for it on 4th down with about a minute to play in the half. Jaden Randall targeted Treson Whitlow down the Alvernia sideline on a deep pass. Whitlow came down with the ball, but was ruled out of bounds and was also called for offensive pass interference.
  • The Eagles took over and were driving with under a minute to play after taking over at their own 47-yard line. After four rushes, Nabb threw a deep ball into the end zone, but Teon Aiken intercepted the pass for the Golden Wolves with under 10 seconds to play in the half. Alvernia ran out the clock as the Eagles took a 14-0 lead into the half.
  • Eastern entered the half with 249 yards off offense - including 226 yards on the ground - as the Eagles held Alvernia to just 55 yards of offense in the first half.
  • Eastern opened the second half with the ball and the Golden Wolves forced a quick three and out to open the half.
  • The Eagles tacked on three to their lead with a 32-yard field goal by John Nolek to give Eastern the 17-0 lead on their second drive of the second half.
  • Alvernia opened its ensuing drive with a 32-yard pass from Randall to Jayden Stanfield to get Alvernia to midfield. But, the drive stalled out from there as Alvernia punted it away and pinned the Eagles on their own six yard line.
  • Eastern picked up 18 yards on the ensuing drive before Alvernia intercepted the ball for the third time, this time into the hands of Jakob Keglovits. Alvernia got to work on the Eastern 22 yard line and made its way down to the three yard line after Randall connected with Stanfield for a 15 yard completion along the Eastern sideline. Alvernia was stopped short on first and second down, but the Golden Wolves found the end zone on a keeper by Dante Viccharelli. Gage Thomas converted the PAT to make it a 17-7 game with 1:19 to play in the third quarter.
  • As the game moved into the fourth quarter, Eastern continued to take advantage of its success on the ground. Facing a 4th and 2 on the Alvernia 34, the Eagles went for it and got just enough to move the chains. Eastern's drive stalled out after two holding calls and Alvernia took over on its own 15. Just two plays into the drive, Alvernia turned it over for the first time as Randall's pass was intercepted by Cole Jones. Jones ran it back to the Alvernia eight yard line. Eastern punched it in on its second play of the drive as Avrilien took it four yards on the ground for a touchdown to give Eastern the 24-7 lead with 9:20 to play.
  • Alvernia got things moving on the next drive. Viccharelli converted a 13-yard pass to Stanfield to move the chains, and Viccharelli picked up another first down on the next play with a ten-yard rush. A holding penalty later in the drive put Alvernia behind the chains for a 3rd and 15, but Viccharelli completed a 19-yard pass to Whitlow for a fresh set of downs in Eastern territory. After a sack and trading of penalties, Viccharelli connected with Whitlow for a 20-yard completion to put Alvernia on the four yard line. Two plays later Ozmere Jones found the end zone for Alvernia on a five yard rush to the right to make it a 24-14 game with just under two minutes to play. The run capped off a 19-play, 76-yard drive that took 7:19, marking Alvernia's longest drive of the day in both time and yards.
  • Eastern ran out the clock on the ensuing drive for the 24-14 final.
