Alvernia Completes Comeback to Down Mustangs, 56-52

BOX SCORE Reading, Pa. (Jan. 10, 2026) - Alvernia University (7-6, 2-0) improved to 2-0 in MAC Commonwealth play with a 56-52 come-from-behind win over Stevenson University (3-10, 0-2) on Saturday evening in MAC Commonwealth Women's Basketball action.

The Mustangs used a strong second quarter to take a 30-23 lead into the half. The Mustangs then led for the majority of the second half before Alvernia evened the game at 46-46 on a pair of successful free throw attempts by Meghan Ruth. Stevenson took a brief lead once again before Alvernia evened the game at 48-48 on a Jordyn Ingelido putback jumper. The Golden Wolves took the lead on a Taryn Woodson layup, and Alvernia held the lead the rest of the way to take the 56-52 win.

How it Happened
  • The Golden Wolves got on the board with an opening possession layup by Olivia Burke, but the Mustangs answered with a 3-pointer to take the early lead. The two sides exchanged points through the early minutes of the game, and the Mustangs held a 14-9 lead through the midpoint of the opening quarter.
  • Alvernia then held Stevenson to just two points over the next four minutes while the Golden Wolves scored eight of their own. Taryn Woodson capped off the quick run for Alvernia with a layup to give the Golden Wolves the 17-16 lead with 44 seconds to play in the quarter. The Mustangs retook the lead on a pair of made free throws, but a jumper from Kyla Reed closed out the quarter and gave Alvernia the 19-18 advantage going into the second frame.
  • The Mustangs opened the second quarter with a trio of made free throws to retake the lead, and Alvernia answered with a Jennah DeGout free throw and a Burke layup to take the 22-21 lead. But, the Golden Wolves were held to just one point the rest of the quarter as the Mustangs took a 30-23 lead into the half.
  • Stevenson pushed its lead to ten, 35-25, through the first minute and a half of third quarter action. Scoring then slowed on both sides, and Alvernia held Stevenson scoreless for nearly four minutes as Alvernia closed within five, 35-30, with five minutes to play in the third.
  • The Mustangs got back on track and pushed their lead back up to nine, 39-30, with 3:34 to play. After a trading of layups, Alvernia closed out the quarter on a 6-0 run to get within three, 41-38, going into the fourth quarter. DeGout converted a layup and Reed went 4-for-4 from the line for Alvernia's final points of the quarter.
  • The Mustangs continued to hold Alvernia off and led by six, 46-40, with seven minutes to play after knocking down a three. But, Stevenson's scoring went cold and Alvernia closed in. A Woodson free-throw and a Burke 3-pointer under pressure brought Alvernia within two, 46-44, with 6:05 to play. The Golden Wolves then tied the game at 46-46 on a pair of made free throws by Meghan Ruth with 4:28 to play.
  • The scoreless stretch briefly ended for the Mustangs as they retook the lead, 48-46, on a layup with four minutes to play.
  • The Golden Wolves answered and evened the game once again at 48-48 on a put-back jumper by Jordyn Ingelido with 3:10 to play.. The Golden Wolves then took the lead for good a minute and a half later as a Woodson layup gave Alvernia the 50-48 lead.
  • The Golden Wolves went 6-for-8 from the free throw line in the final stretch to hold off the Mustangs and improve to 2-0 in MAC Commonwealth play with the 56-52 win.
