Reading, PA (Oct. 11, 2005) – Marywood University scored twice in the later stages of the first half and held on for a 2-1 win over Alvernia College Tuesday afternoon in Pennsylvania Athletic Conference women’s soccer action at Schlager Memorial Field.

            Alvernia held the balance of the attack early and broke through in the 27th minute when sophomore Brandi Light (Myerstown, PA/Tulpehocken) hit a shot through the hands of Marywood goalie Amy Hand (Wallkill, NY/Valley Central).  Junior forward Lisa Sothern (Philadelphia, PA/Cardinal Dougherty) was in the right place at the right time and walked the ball into the empty net for her second goal of the year.

            Marywood (5-7, 4-4  PAC) took less than two minutes to knot the score at 1-1.  Senior midfielder Liz McGill (Elmira, NY/Elmira Notre Dame), who assisted on both Pacer goals, placed a ball in the box that forced a 50/50 situation between Marissa Ruda (Athens, PA/Elmira Notre Dame) and Alvernia keeper Katie Einsel (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin).  Ruda was able to sidestep a sliding Einsel with control and beat a hustling Alvernia defender to tie the score at 1-1.

            McGill fed another ball into the box in the 36th minute that found junior midfielder Annie McDonald (Sag Harbor, NY/Notre Dame Academy) who beat Einsel to the near post for a 2-1 Pacer lead.  Alvernia continued to have chances in the second half, but Hand made four of her eight saves to preserve the win.

            Alvernia will travel to Neumann College next Tuesday for a PAC match-up with the Knights.
