Tale Of Two Halves, Alvernia Tops DeSales, 3-0

Manzolillo Saves 11 In Fourth Shutout

Box Score

Wyomissing, PA (Oct. 22, 2005) – Junior forward Megan Novogratz (Allentown, PA/Central Catholic) tallied two goals and Becky Macchine (Richland, PA/Conrad Weiser) a third, all in the second half, to lead Alvernia College to a 3-0 win over DeSales University in non-conference field hockey action Saturday at Wyomissing High School.

The decision to move to Wyomissing was made on Friday due to rain in the forecast and potentially dangerous field conditions at Alvernia.

DSU (9-7) held the balance of the offensive opportunities in the opening half, but couldn’t solve Alvernia keeper Carey Manzolillo (Bernville, PA/Governor Mifflin) who made eight of her 11 saves during the first half and picked up her fourth shutout of the season.  The Crusaders turned the tide after halftime, outshooting the Bulldogs, 14-4 in the second frame.

Novogratz broke the scoreless tie just over 12 minutes into the second half.  Sophomore forward Shayna Clark (Leesport, PA/Schuylkill Valley) found Novogratz from the top of the circle and the 5-8 junior backhanded the ball past DSU keeper Amy Zoltek (Harleysville, PA/Lansdale Catholic).  The Crusaders kept up the pressure prompting a Bulldog timeout following a long hit in the 57th minute.

Macchione put any thoughts of a momentum swing to rest stealing the ensuing restart and beating a few defenders before slamming home her 20th goal of the season to put the Crusaders up 2-0.  Macchione, the career leading scorer at Alvernia, has now scored at least 20 goals in each of her first three seasons.

The tandem of Macchione and Novogratz struck once more in the 68th minute with Novogratz scoring her 17th tally of the season to close the scoring.

Alvernia will return to the conference schedule on Monday when it travels to Eastern University for a 3:30 game with the Eagles.
