Alvernia Sews Up Top Seed With 2-1 Win Over Eastern

Sloppy Conditions Force A Move To Rosemont College

Box Score

St Davids, PA (Oct. 24, 2005) – Junior Jessie Titus (Leesport, PA/Schuylkill Valley) tallied an unassisted goal and Laura Bilger (Reading, PA/Governor Mifflin) drove home a penalty stroke to lead Alvernia College to a 2-1 win over Eastern University Monday afternoon in Pennsylvania Athletic Conference field hockey action at Eastern University and Rosemont College.

With 12:10 left in the first half, in a scoreless game, the officials deemed the Eastern field unfit for play due to sloppy conditions that caused several players to loose both balance and traction.  Both teams were bussed to Rosemont College, about a 10-minute trip, where play was resumed.  Titus broke the scoreless tie just less than a minute after the restart and Bilger’s third goal of the season put the Crusaders (14-3, 10-1 PAC) up 2-0 with four minutes left in the first half.

Eastern broke through on June Brandt’s seventh goal of the season with just over 19 minutes remaining, but Alvernia senior Carey Manzolillo (Bernville, PA/Governor Mifflin), who made all six of her saves in the second half, kept the Eagles at bay as Alvernia picked up its 10th conference win this season.

With the win, Alvernia locks up the top seed for the PAC playoffs.  The Crusaders will receive a first-round bye and host a semifinal game on Wednesday.
