ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown improved to 13-2-2 overall with a 3-0 home win over Alvernia College, which dropped to 6-10-1 overall with the non-conference loss, Wednesday night. The Blue Jays held an 18-7 advantage in shots over Alvernia, and Etown had five corner kicks against none for the visiting Crusaders.
The first half was scoreless, and Etown’s Mike Helsel (Palmyra, PA/Palmyra) scored the game’s first goal unassisted 4:31 into the second half. A goal by Matt Diller (Chambersburg, PA/Mercersburg Academy) off a Michael Terry (Beech Creek, PA/Central Mountain) assist at 58:29 gave Etown a 2-0 lead. The game’s final goal came with 8:43 left to play when Brian Healy (Newark, DE/A.I. DuPont) scored his team-leading eighth goal off assists by Helsel and Rick Winstanley (Manchester, UK/St. Gabriel’s).
Etown goalie A.J. Fleisher (Kutztown, PA/Kutztown Area) made three saves, all of them in the second half, to preserve the shutout. Alvernia goalie Richard Kessler (Reading, PA/Reading) made eight saves on the night.
Elizabethtown will return to action Saturday, October 29, when the Blue Jays host nationally top-ranked Messiah College in the final Commonwealth Conference game of the regular season for both teams.
